Janelle Monáe just came out as non-binary: ‘I don’t see myself as a woman’
“… “I’m non-binary so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely,” Monáe explained. “I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘’he’ or the ‘she’.”
Monáe continued: “And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women.
“I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary.” …”

Janelle Monae coming out as non-binary is super, super important to me as a black femme and I sincerely hope that you all boost them just like you boost white trans people who come out.
They used both she/her and they/them y'all
Janelle Monáe comes out as nonbinary and shares their rather unique pronouns
[I.D: An extract from the interview linked that reads “"My pronouns are free-ass motherf and they/them, her/she,” the performer and newly minted author told The Times in a feature published Thursday ahead of her appearance at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.“ End I.D]
I suppose we have known for some time, but now it is official, the talented music maker and actor Janelle Monáe has told the world that they are nonbinary.
This was on the April 20 episode of “Red Table Talk” (via NBC News), where Monáe said:
“I’m nonbinary, so I just don’t see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the ‘he’ or the ‘she.’ And if I am from God, I am everything. I am everything. But I will always, always stand with women. I will always stand with Black women. But I just see everything that I am. Beyond the binary.”
Heads up regarding her pronouns! While it’s totally understandable to see people using they/them pronouns after hearing this news, I think it’s important to recognize that nonbinary people aren’t required to use they/them pronouns (or any other set for that matter) and to respect Janelle’s wishes for how she’s stated she wants to be referred to

“Groundbreaking musician, actor, fashion icon, and futurist Janelle Monáe is joined by literary collaborators Danny Lore and Sheree Renée Thomas for a conversation moderated by ALOK to celebrate the launch of The Memory Librarian at BAM. A sexy, soulful, and dissident collection of short fiction, The Memory Librarian brings to the written page the rebellious and Afrofuturistic world of Monáe’s critically acclaimed album Dirty Computer.
The stories in The Memory Librarian explore the lives of those living in an increasingly surveillance-hungry, totalitarian order—striving to see and hold onto their “dirtiness” without being tracked down and cleaned. Filled with the artistic innovation and brave themes that have made Janelle Monáe a global influence, this anthology sees our battles about gender identity, political violence, and sexuality as matters of space, time, love, and the power of memory.”
