According to a local man who offered us a ride to the ferry station back to Kagoshima 鹿児島 at the very southern tip of Kyûshû 九州, this is an almost daily sight. For us it was a massive volcanic outbreak that would certainly scare us without all the soothing voices from the locals. Well, we came for the volcano, we got the volcano. Sakurajima 桜島 was an island until the last big eruption in 1914 built a bridge to the mainland. Apparently it spits ash almost daily, which is a big annoyance depending on the wind direction. When we arrived at Kagoshima and left the train station, we immediately felt like marching through a huge swarm of insects. Tickeling and itching eveywhere. It took us some time to realize, it was just the ash. And yes, you get used to it.

I travelled around Kyushu for a month, covering all the prefectures except Okinawa. During this period, my main mode of transport between each prefecture was bus. Something that did not occur to me until my WWOOF host shared with me that travelling by bus might be more convenient and cheaper than train. Typically, travelling by bus is cheaper, more convenient with less transfer and also,…

(Saturday, 7. June)

As mentioned before, we went to see Mt. Sakurajima, which is located in Kagoshima Bay. The weather was kinda misty so both the volcano’s tip and Kagoshima itself when viewed from the mountain weren’t that visible. But up close it was very nice! We took a bus tour around a part of the island (it was a little too late to take the one that goes completely around) with a few stops at notable points of interest. The observatory far up the mountain offered a nice view. The last two pictures also show the thick layer of volcanic ash that covers basically everything on the island. Not only that, the areas near the harbor also had a lot of ash collecting on the ground, from when the wind carries it across the bay.

So I submitted a video for The JET Programme Video Contest. My entry is a little different to the others in that I didn’t make a montage or just “introduce” my region, but decided to be creative and do a fake movie trailer instead. If you can spare a couple of minutes, I would really appreciate a vote!!

Vote for me here:  https://jetvideocontest.com/system/international/pc/?c=contest-2&r_cstm_contest_pk=99

維新dancin'鹿児島市 スペシャルムービー

If you want something entertaining to watch I recommend this video! This is the 150 Year Anniversary of the Meiji Restoration and the hometown of Saigo Takamori. This is a promotional video for Kagoshima-city made with a local high school’s male gymnastics teams. This video is very funny and the tune is super catchy!
