Tomorrow’s my first day at a new job so it’s time to properly announce that I finished up at Marvel Animation a couple months ago. It’s been an INCREDIBLE journey working on Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel Rising over the last three and a half years! There are no words to describe how grateful I am that they took a chance on me and taught me everything I know about boarding. I’ve made wonderful memories with the crew that’ll be close to my heart forever. My life changed for the better since I started at Marvel and though I’m sad to leave, I’ll continue to grow and one day I’m sure I’ll be back better than ever!

Given the leaks turned confirmation of the power change for Kamala Khan in the upcoming Disney+ show, I figured I’d gift this to my Kamala Khan fam upset with the changes being done to Kamala’s origins.
Been watching the discussion from the side and I can’t help but notice how quick people are dismiss legitimate concerns with all these changes and frankly it’s annoying.
I am afraid to ask but what they change about her powers?
It’s been confirmed that rather than the elasticity powers she has in the comics, the show is going to change it to Kamala being able to making Energy Constructs:
This coincides with an earlier leak/rumor which revealed that not only would Kamala’s powers be changed, but the actual source of the powers would also be completely changed. Rather than being turned into an Inhuman through the terrigen mist, Kamala would instead find a family amulet that gives her “Djinn” powers.
…that’s racist
There is so many things wrong with this because like there is this lack of awareness. Correct me if I am wrong, but aren’t Jinn considered demons in the Koran? And the idea that they mix and matched Kamala with her actual fucking sidekick Amulet is baffling.
What’s described is literally his power and it comes from a family heirloom. And before you say, “how come that’s not racist but when Kamala does it, it is?” Because what Fadi aka Amulet does is explicitly noted that his power is considered taboo in his culture.
But that’s not Kamala’s story.
This is like absurd.
There’s also the fact that Kamala having a power change means that she cannot morph into Carol in her origin story. Which means her entire arc about realizing that she does not need to be some white, blonde haired, blue-eyed woman to be a hero. Her entire story of self-acceptance and overcoming internalized racism is gone.
Kamala is having a power change and it’s likely being done so that she can match and/or better compliment Carol, because Kamala’s very specially not pretty looking polymorph powers don’t vibe with the white woman aesthetics. It’s not just a change in her power set, it’s a fundamental change in her origin and who she is as a character. And this change to the Pakistani-Muslim’s character is being done to better center a white woman who is the current poster child for USAF in cinema.
Fuck, and I mean this with all my heart, the MCU.
If this turns out to be true (which I don’t doubt because fuck the MCU), then FUCK THE MCU.
X-Mansion – Xavier’s Institute for Gifted Mutants aka the place where a bunch of horny teenage mutants sleep around when not saving the world. Only the girls are left and you’re expected to do the latter and the former with them.
Sam stands in the chapel, looking up at the stained glass and thinking about ends of the world.
Bucky stands just across from him. He’s wearing Sam’s ancient grey US Air Force hoodie and sipping solemnly from a juice box. Sam is thinking maybe they could put a tabletop in – convert some of those pews. In college he’d spent a week bartending to cover for a friend, and he wasn’t half bad.
“So we’re adopting four kids now,” Bucky says, into the quiet.
The chapel isn’t big enough for his voice to echo. It just sounds out, matter-of-fact, and Sam, already wearied by the inescapable, unchangeable burden of life, says,
“Yeah.”
Bucky takes another sip of the juice. It’s apple flavoured; there’s a little cartoon Macintosh on the front with its thumbs up.
“Okay,” he says, and in a way, Sam supposes, that’s the beginning of it all.

You could argue comic books have little importance in the grander scheme of things. But comic books make a big statement in a small way. We won’t have blockbuster movies about a Muslim superhero until we can all be excited about a comic book portraying one. When Marvel created Khan, it took a shot at breaking the typical paradigm of superheroes. While it’s a small gesture when measured up to the entire comic book world, it’s another step in the movement for equality in entertainment.
For the larger part of the decade, there was a potent cloud of racism and hatred towards Muslim people. Today, the fact we can portray young Muslim girls as superheroes is a beacon of hope for what is to come. Sure, a lot of people will say “it’s just a comic book.” But I’d like to think somewhere out there, it’s making a difference in a young Muslim girl’s life. And even if the message gets lost and Khan’s character doesn’t sell well, at least a young girl could have her own superhero to look up to.
