The last couple of weeks have been relaxed on my end and I am taking the time to redesign my website. Been going through all my archives and landed on these photos I took in the 2016 Presidential Campaigns when I followed Dr. Kizza Besigye’s trail around Kampala for a day. Those were different days. The tension between the state and its citizens wasn’t as high as it has been with the People Power movement.
Looking back to the year we are ending, Most notable of all events is going to be the aftermath of the Uganda Presidential elections that was Marred by record-breaking State Violence.
The weeks leading up to Uganda’s elections were characterized by widespread violence and human rights abuses. These included NUMEROUS killings by State security forces, arrests and beatings of opposition supporters and journalists, disruption of opposition rallies, and a shutdown of the internet. To date, Facebook can only be accessed with help of a VPN.
For me, the signs were clear from as early as 2020 and from an early stage, I made a decision not to engage with any of the campaign rallies for fear of my life. Salute to all the journalists and photographers who dared to preserve this year’s history amidst the life-threatening chaos.

This 42-day long lockdown got me setting up a studio in my living room about a week ago to take photos of my son Zaabu and just 2 days ago, @rahmashooz passed by for her birthday shoot.
I am seriously considering leaving the photography equipment permanently stationed here.

Would you imagine that 1.8 BILLION people globally use a source of drinking water contaminated with feces?
Recently on assignment with @water_compass an organization whose strategy is definitely working, trying to make clean water accessible to people along the cattle corridor ( specific in Sembabule and Masaka) but targeting communities where disease transmission is most likely occur.
These guys install water systems that pump water from underground, which is available all year round, clean for direct consumption and very affordable.
During the 2 days’ shoot, a number of facts were broken to my ears and they’re quite worrying.
Imagine;
- Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death of children under five years of age in Uganda.
- 35% of the rural population in Uganda does not have access to a safe water source
- Hygiene and sanitation related diseases currently contribute to 70% of the disease burden in Uganda.
- Only 17% of the rural people in Uganda have access to improved sanitation
