“I’m you but in drag!” Costume study of Jesus!Villanelle S4x02
As a costuming student, I was first drawn to Killing Eve from its costumes, especially the way they were so iconic and crucial to character development during seasons 1&2. The show utilised fashion as a weapon, and that fascinated me, inspiring me to create such distinctive aesthetics within my own work.
This show meant so much to me, a young, queer person in the arts and the finale has left me feeling hopeless about the very industry I am training to enter. Do better.
I think there’s something really telling about the fact that KE, which was never meant to be a show about redemption, spent a whole season forcing a queer main character into a plot heavily driven by religion and then at the end of it all claimed that same queer character’s death was a rebirth or cleansing for her partner, who was formerly straight. There is just something really disgusting about that whole thought process, especially when they then topped it off with bloody angel wings and some sort of ascension to a higher plane, when we know that V didn’t believe in any such thing. Why was this arc that tried to redeem a character who didn’t need redeeming introduced and then backed up with rhetoric that makes it appear that this “redemption” was more about returning her partner to “normalcy” (read heteronormative) than about her own actual redemption? The homophobia is just bubbling under the surface and really makes you start to wonder if the choices that we all find so vile and shocking were made as ignorantly as we’ve assumed. Rather, these may have been very deliberate choices that are having the exact impact that was intended
me: it’s not carolyn’s characters fault that she was written to do something so random and out of the blue in the end to order villanelles death it’s Laura Neal’s fault for once again proving that the “bury your gays trope” is still alive and thriving and shock value deaths are still seen as good quality writing instead of a cheap cop out
also me: the only carolyn spin off show that i will watch is if it ends with her getting shot by eve the same way as villanelle did as soon as carolyn feels even a smidge of happiness in her empty ass life and then shows eve walking away with a smile on her face
I actually can’t stop thinking about it…how bad I feel for fans that were really invested in Villanelle/Villaneve because at the VERY least with Lexa in 2016 we got SOME kind of moment of goodbye/seasons of remembrance & mourning (not that I watched) but THIS??? Talk about a baseball bat to the FACE and then roll credits forever like what the actual fuck were they thinking????
I’m glad I haven’t been as invested in KE as I was for seasons 1&2 because I am very sadly seeing a lot of posts that are depressingly reminiscent of 2016 and that is just…a real fucking bummer.
