Something about Laudna’s backstory is I would. L O V E. For her to have a conversation with KiKi in the future. That would be such an earth-shattering moment for both of them. But that would be Marisha talking to herself lol.
“Animation is just for kids”
Yeah, sure.
I love how Marisha categorically rejectsthe whole “What doesn’t kills you, makes you stronger” type of stories with her characters. I mean, she directly said that in talks, but is also nice to see how her work shows it.
For Keyleth, “What doesn’t kills you…” stays with you your whole life, in form of anxiety and self consciousness. Stays with you in form of mourning and the truth of watching you family go away in the thousand years+ that you’re going to live. You have to work through it, help those you can help, learn how your voice carries power, and learn what being a leader means.
For Beau, “What doesn’t kills you…” Fucks you up beyond belief. Distorts your value as a person and how you approach your relationship with the world. Damages how you treat yourself. You’ll have to re-learn, with the help of friends and those painfully new formed relationships, how to heal, and how to let people in. You forge yourself a new and shinny found family and start working in the true meaning or yourself.
For Laudna, “What doesn’t kills you…” well, it actually did kill you, but then it didn’t. It robbed you of years, it isolated you for decades. Your killer is now trapped inside your head, making you uneasy, haunted. But you wanted new friends and ways to help them, so in spite of all that, you go out, being unapologetically yourself, and offer that eagerness to the world. Facing some rejections sure, but not letting those bringing you down, you already went trough worse.
Her works will NEVER say “I’m better because x happened to me”.
Her works DO say loudly “I was dealt a bad thing, but in spite of that, i’ll do my best to move forward. Its going to be awkward, painful and hard. Its going to be messy and sometimes not only upwards. But i’m working through it with everything i have” and i love her for it.
On 4 Sided Dive Travis said he’s trying to get Chetney to 4 digits age wise and then he says “Keyleth on a hill all remorseful and a crow lands and Chetney’s like What up girl?”
When I heard that all I could think of was the post that said if Chetney ever met Keyleth, he would change the meaning of R.T.A. to Respect The Antlers.
Now I just have the image in my head of BH going to Zephra, Chetney scooting up next to Keyleth and being like “so is there a Mr. Tempest?” And Orym blanching because from what little he knows, that’s a touchy subject.
Keyleth from Critical Role
My thoughts on Keyleth and Vex in episode 11/12…
(Short and sweet this time, and again, spoilers for the campaign…)
I thought it was interesting that they decided to have Keyleth take Delilah’s finger of death for Vex. I mean, there are a lot of reasons why I feel like it works. It’s kind of poignant for her life to risk ending just after something as epic as that sunbeam, and putting her in danger instead of Vex makes the outcome feel a lot more uncertain after Pike’s disappearance, because we saw her bring Cass back from the brink, and if it were anyone else in danger we’d have that in mind.
Still, I might be wrong, but, I think they might have done it this way because otherwise the scene coming later when Vex goes down in “The Sunken Tomb” would feel too similar. This way everyone gets their chance to panic, and have this moment of fear despite otherwise having won… But later, when Vex’s life is on the line, not near death but dead, and perhaps beyond saving, it will be so much more dramatic and heart-wrenching if it’s the first time we get to see Vax face the thought of losing his sister in such a real way.
It’ll frame the level of desperation that ends in his oath to the Raven Queen in a really impactful way.
(Also, I love Vex and Keyleth’s scene at the Sun Tree. Vex letting go of her defensiveness, and giving her the recognition she’s always honestly known Kiki deserved because they almost lost her, and life’s too short for petty shit…)
Laura, re: Vex being kind of mean to Keyleth: “Vex and Vax grew up having- continually losing everything in their life that is important to them, in various ways. And the only constant throughout their life was each other. And they’ve always relied on each other, they’ve always had each others back. So in these moments of seeing ‘Oh- there’s a genuine interest there’- because I’m sure, in their past they’ve had moments of, you know- he’s gonna go off and do something, she’s gonna go off and do something-”
Liam: “They’ve both had dalliances.”
Laura: “Yeah, obviously. But, like, this is the first time she’s seeing this vulnerability with someone else, and like 'Oh shit, I know where this could go’, and the terror of being left behind, in those moments, comes out, for Vex, as- cold shoulder, shittiness, basically. Like, I’m gonna push away the thing that is putting me at risk.
So she’s extra terrible to Keyleth, in those moments, because she’s the thing that’s coming between her and the most important thing in her life.”
