The most serendipitous event in his life had been when Trianna teleported himself to this floating continent instead of to their intended location in Nagxia. Azys Lla, it was called judging by the information provided by the barely functioning automatons and the few adventurers who had trekked here. Luckily Trianna had traced the ley lines and memorized their convergence on the island so the pair could visit any time they wished. Granted it took a lot of effort on her behalf so he did his best not to make the journey as often as he once did.

A clap of thunder drew his attention away from his workspace. His eyes drew upwards to the green aurora rippling across the green clouds, creating an effect almost like light reflecting off the water’s surface. A bolt of green thunder arced from the skies to a device hovering far above him in the sky. Aetherolightning rods, he dubbed them as their purpose seemed to be to be a taller object than the surrounding buildings to coax lighting away from them. It seemed to double as a power transmitter, though the output of it was not nearly enough to maintain the entirety of the facilities on the islands.

“Have you made any progress, my lord?” Trianna approached him and peered over his shoulder at his workbench. She stood just shy of five fulms, over two fulms shorter than he, though her hair looped upwards nearly half a fulm in its design. He suppressed the urge for the edges of his mouth to twitch upwards.

Kuroda turned to her and curtly shook his head. “No. Despite how much I dissect them, study them, compare them to each other, the secrets to the creation of these chimera still eludes me.”

Her already fair skin paled further. “Is that… an arm?”

He nodded curtly. “Yes. It seems they were attempting to create humanoids out of other races.” He motions to one of the specimens that appeared to be a fish with arm-like fins. “It appears this is an early attempt at creating what is categorized as a hropken today.” He motions over to a green blob with humanoid arms sprouting from it. “This thing appears to be an attempt at growing arms rather than adapting the existing structures. The louse was delivered to me already dead. I am not sure if the arms are ambulatory or not.”

“That’s horrid.”

Kuroda turned back to the specimens and continued his examinations. “Yes. That is precisely why it is so intriguing.”
