Crossing the Line: Leslie Cheung as a Gender Icon
By Catherine Weng
The famous Hong Kong actor and singer Leslie Cheung passed away 18 years ago; however, the gender conventions he broke keep inspiring people even till today. He was one of the most popular Hong Kong stars back in the 1980s. His most famous film even won the the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and went viral in western countries, and he also toured around the world with his influential music. Despite his fame, he was never afraid of being different, embracing bold elements in his performance, crossing the gender line, exploring his sexuality, and even provoking controversy with his androgynous self in a conservative society.
