just ordered myself a (secondhand) Sigma 105mm f/2.4 lens this morning from eBay and I am very excited for it to arrive, even though I do feel a bit guilty for ordering another lens… (but I will definitely use it, so there’s always that)

Anyone ever used this (or a similar macro) before? Would love to hear your thoughts on it!

I have a canon 100mm f/2.8L. If you’re not used to prime lenses (fixed focal length / non-zoom), that could take getting some used to as you can’t zoom to frame.

My lens has a very shallow depth of focus screen though “wide open” is only 2.8. I find using it for its intended purpose (macro of small things) is almost impossible without using a tripod as a result, though someone with a steadier hand may do better.

I still enjoy the lens - it’s super sharp and at 100mm it’s a fantastic portrait lens, especially with the shallow DoF to blur the background, and the sharpness lets you take pictures and crop to frame and still get the image quality you want instead of zooming to frame.

I don’t know the sigma but I’d imagine it’s got a similar autofocus limit switch (limits to close focus or far focus, or unlimited, to try to increase autofocus performance). Make sure to check its setting if you can’t get autofocus to work.

(late addition) if you’re taking close-ups of very small things, lighting can be an issue because the camera and lens will shadow a camera-mounted flash. One of these days I’ll probably buy a front-of-lens mounted flash; in the meantime I’ve used my flash on a cable to shine better on the subject and handheld another slaved flash on the other side to simulate that set-up… but it’s easier to take pictures in good daylight!

Thanks for your reply @stumblngrumbl

I’m happy to say that the lens arrived this morning! I got an Error 01 at first, but a quick wipe of the contact points and the lens works perfectly. I bought it second-hand, refurbished, so I was half-expecting something to not work anyway.

I’ve got 4x prime lenses already (55mm, 2x 50mm, 14mm), so I am used to working around my subject and not having the zoom feature. I actually prefer prime lenses to zoom lenses, I think it makes you work harder as a photographer. With zoom lenses, there’s the danger of sticking in one place shooting from one angle with different zooms, which is essentially just the exact same photo at different tightness of crops. It can make you lazy as a photographer. Of course, both types of lenses have their strengths and weaknesses in different situations.

I’m so glad you mentioned about the portraits - I am really excited to try the lens on some models! I’ve got a shoot coming up in a couple of weeks (fairytale-esque themed, I’m super looking forward to it) so I’ll try it out then.

I’m also planning on using the lens for some food macro shots. stumblngumbl, that is a good point of using bright/quality enough light, and thanks for the tip as well about the camera-mounted flash. When I use artificial light, I usually use my off-camera speedlite or my more recent purchase, a continuous LED light (it is so dreamy), so I’ll probably be alright for the shadow cast from the lens.

For those who don’t know, I post mainly on my food ig now (here x). I’ve turned my attention to food photography mostly, with some dance photography on the side. And the occasional post of whatever I feel like on here, too ;)

Anyway. I’m rambling.

Have a good day.
