[LMK Theory regarding Sun Wukong ]

Ever since Season 3, people have said that Wukong can’t read, but I don’t think that’s the case

I have a small theory that Wukong knows how to read at an extent BUT….his knowledge is outdated. Here me out:

We all know that languages change over time. A lot of times, the grammar, spelling (kanji included) tends to change over time. Wukong knows certain things (like the 37 emails from his lawyer) but for some reason he didn’t want to read the poster from the Latern City

My theory is that he didn’t learn the modern language from Megapolis. He’s spent so much time on Flower Fruit Mountain for practically thousands of years, he’s bound to have been stuck on the old language from the Tang dynasty including during the time where he was on the journey with his crew

I’ve seen multiple sorts of media where they actually had Sun Wukong reading different materials

A lot of people say that Wukong can’t read but I don’t think that’s the case. In short, just like his way of communication, his knowledge on the alphabet/kanji/writing is outdated as well

fansids:

I’m so happy this series finally showcased what an absolute POWERHOUSE Sun Wukong is (I was genuinely getting concerned by how nerfed he seemed at times).

It’s really funny how confident LBD was at the beginning. “Even now I sense you do not have what it takes to defeat me.” Proceeds to absolutely destroy her ass.

“My power has far surpassed what it was when we last met in battle.” Girl….how weak were you before now??? Cause if this is an improvement I can’t see the previous battle being much of a struggle for him.

This really makes me wonder why in the world he felt intimidated enough to go look for a weapon to defeat LBD in the first place. He was throwing her around the entire time and only briefly struggled when not-mayor joined. And even then it took like thirty seconds for him to put him out of commission. And it’s not like she planned to posses him either, it just happened due to her desperation.

Taking into account the room Tang, Chef Zhu, and Sha Dali found, I’m choosing to believe the original battle between SWK and LBD was a source of trauma for SWK (side-eyes a certain theory I’ve read) hence why he was so frightened of her.

Spoilers spoilers!!

But I have to talk about why Sun Wukong was so afraid of LBD and the last thing you said which is that she’s is a source of trauma for him. Because that’s exactly it!

So to set the scene, the Journey To The West og source material operates on allegorical logic. The actual logistics of what can and can’t be done isn’t consistent and it only matters depending on the moral meaning the book is trying to tell. It seems weird and silly that Monkey, a quintuply immortal being that almost overthrew heaven and was essentially invincible would have trouble with a scorpion or a goldfish, but he does, because metaphors. He’s invincible power wise, but since the journey isn’t about power, it’s about strength of character.

And so this means in the journey, the LBD is one of the most fearsome monsters despite being weak af. Because the losing condition isn’t death, or weakness, it’s quitting the journey and mental weakness. And she fully made Wukong up and leave. Like she goes down without a fight, like she wasn’t able to get a hit in, but she made Monkey give up. Which for the rest of the pilgrims, is a death sentence, and to him, it’s him giving up on self improvement and goodness.

LBD both in the book and the show represents fear and isolation. She effectively causes distrust, instability and isolation in the og pilgrims. She effectively causes loneliness and uncertainty in MK and drives Wukong away just as she did originally. Wukong is afraid of her because she is a stand in for the antithesis of the Lego monkie kid’s core theme of togetherness and support. She embodies mistrust, self doubt and doubt in your peers. Metaphorically she is the stone in the road to friendship.

And maybe Monkey still didn’t know how to deal with her. All his friends are gone and he has beef with most of the people of his time. She was already winning. And when Monkey goes off on his own, she already has the upper hand, he was right where she wanted him.

She’s not particularly strong because she doesn’t need to be. She just needs to be there to watch everyone else’s weakness destroy them first. Even when she is destroyed, she still gets the last laugh. Even if she didn’t win, the heroes still lost along the way.

Idk if that made sense haha

Basically LBD is scary to Wukong because she represents mental and emotional fear/weakness, even if she’s physically weak. You can’t punch your way out of your trust issues.
