Selma Browner Man Ray
Selma Browner (1911-1998), photographed in 1940 by Man Ray (1890-1976). Browner was his sister-in-law.

Man Ray was born Emmanuel Radnitzky on this day in 1890. He rejected his birth name and his Russian-Jewish immigrant past, moving as an expatriate to Paris in 1921. In this solarized self-portrait from the Jewish Museum collection taken in 1930, he projects self-confidence in securing not just a comfortable distance from his roots, but also a new status as the only American within the Parisian avant-garde. In changing his name from the colloquial “Manny” to the unmoored “Man,” the artist lost and found himself in anonymity.

Happy birthday to Man Ray, who produced works in a variety of artistic styles, including the production of photograms (which he called rayograms)—photographs created without the use of a camera by placing objects on light-sensitive material and then exposing the material to light.

Distort images
It’s said this portrait of me (L), was the inspiration for Man Ray’s 1922 portrait of Marquise Casati ®. Curators and art historians have debated the charge for decades. Both can be viewed at the Tate Modern, London. You’ve got to call ahead to see mine though, rarely is it exhibited to the public - the insurance alone would cripple the museum.

“Rrose Sélavy, the feminine alter ego created by Marcel Duchamp, is one of the most complex and pervasive pieces in the enigmatic puzzle of the artist’s oeuvre. She first emerged in portraits made by the photographer Man Ray in New York in the early 1920s, when Duchamp and Man Ray were collaborating on a number of conceptual photographic works. Rrose Sélavy lived on as the person to whom Duchamp attributed specific works of art, Readymades, puns, and writings throughout his career. By creating for himself this female persona whose attributes are beauty and eroticism, he deliberately and characteristically complicated the understanding of his ideas and motives.” - PMA
