I received a copy of this book in exchanged for a honest review. In no way did the author or publishing company influence my review. For info on my book reviews click here

Sigh. This book was not what I was expecting, or what I wanted. I wanted teenage/20-something Nat, fresh from Russia, new to SHIELD, kicking ass and being amazing, and most importantly: I WANTED HAWKEYE. ALL THE TEENAGE HAWKEYE. I cannot even express how much I wanted young Nat and Clint to meet and be amazing. Now is probably a good time to mention I didn’t read the summary for the book. I just saw “Black Widow,” “YA,” and “Margaret Stohl” and immediately knew I needed it.

I liked the story, but I still want the before mentioned “Natasha and Clint are teenage badasses.” story a lot more. Hell, if Hawkeye was mentioned at all I would have been happy. Yeah, you read that right. Clint Barton, Black Widow’s best friend, wasn’t even mentioned in this book. Excuse me while I sob. (If case you haven’t noticed, Hawkeye is my favorite superhero in the world.) If other avengers could be in it, why the hell not Clint?

However, this was still a Marvel YA book written by the amazing Margaret Stohl, co-author of my beloved Caster Chronicles. I loved the writing, but the lack of Hawkeye knocked off a star. The insta-love knocked off another half. And the setting? Another half. When on earth did this book take place?? It took place after The Avengers, but Coulson was very much alive, but not the director of SHIELD, so maybe pre- Agents of Shield? Which would mean Natasha would have known he was alive, which seems likely, but I still wish it would have been clearer.

Ava and Alex, new to the Marvel world, were a little hard to like. Probably because it’s a familiar world, and it’s hard to introduce new characters to it.

if you’re a fan of marvel, you should probably read it if you want.
