Work on the Busou Shinki battle arena is now complete! I’m really happy with how it turned out and glad to finish this project after having it on my mind for so long.
I need to get round to setting up some proper action scenes, but for the moment Strarf is on hand to give you a sense of scale whilst Arnval and Mizuki take a break under a Re-Ment kotatsu.

In my quest to build a model battle arena for my Busou Shinkis, I’ve now finished getting the parts cut at a nearby company with laser cutting machine for hire (thanks Bristol Design Forge!).
I’ve used a combination of 3mm laser-grade plywood and 5mm white acrylic for the parts. If you’re lasercutting plywood, I’d definitely recommend checking the material for any warping and using fixings to keep it as flat as possible on the bed of the machine. I’d also recommend setting up the cutting order so that any engraving is done first, then internal cuts (i.e. holes in parts) and then finally external cuts. This is so that if the material is slightly warped, it’s less likely to interfere with the position of later cuts as parts are cut out and drop onto the bed.
As you can see from the photos, there are loads of parts but luckily they all fit snuggly together. The next step is to get the plywood painted up, so I’d better get to it!

Material for the Busou Shinki battle arena getting cut in the laser cutting machine!
I’ve had the idea of building a replica battle arena from the Busou Shinki games for some time now. Recently I decided to commit to getting it fully designed and made, so here begins development!
I was originally using LibreCAD to produce the designs, so that I could export them and use a laser cutter machine to make the parts. I found it difficult to visualise and design some of the more complex components, so I ended up switching application and using the 3D editing tool Sketchup 2015. This made it really easy to design the battle arena and visualise it at the same time. In fact, the screenshot at the beginning of this post is from Sketchup.
If you’re aware of Sketchup, you might be wondering why I haven’t been using a newer version of the software (especially given that it’s free for non-commercial use). I’ve used a specific plugin that allows the faces of shapes to be exported as SVG files, thus making it really easy to get the necessary parts lasercut. Unfortunately this plugin isn’t compatible with later versions of Sketchup, so I’ve had to stick with the 2015 version. As an aside, I’d be interested in finding someone who can make the plugin compatible with later Sketchup versions and maintain it, or get a crowd funding project together to hire some development time with a developer!
Returning to the battle arena, the design is finalised and ready to burn, so I’m really looking forward to making this idea a reality!

Despite the restrictions that many of us are facing at this time, Pomock’s managed to briefly enjoy the spring blossom in my garden before being brought back safely indoors!

Well well well! A modern destroyer? How interesting. Now I won’t lie a pretend I know what kind of a ship she is save a missile destroyer thing. (Damn my route for historical stuff, my gap knowledge has been shown.) Still I think the wetsuit a very good idea for modern day Kantai collection clothing.

HMS Venturer, a V-Class Submarine of Great Britain
The first submarine in history to sunk another submarine while both were underwater. it’s kill was U-864 who was carrying important cargo for the Japanese.
Throwing knives, now throwing torpedoes. Getting a swimsuit was hard but I picked stripped fuller lower combined with a tube top like upper. Look at those ballast tanks trying to get out ho ho~
