#FridayFeature of new accessions to the JMM collections: Tabletop clamp meat grinder.

From the donor: “I remember my mother, Joyce Hahn Kahl (born 1924), using this meat grinder at home when I grew up. She would screw it on the kitchen table top or counter top, to grind leftover roast beef and potatoes. The mixture then would be baked in the oven and served for a hash dinner (with ketchup!) … My mother got it from her motherElsa Goldberg Hahn Reisman, who was born (1897) and grew up in NYC… My best guess is that the grinder originally belonged to my great-grandmother, Augusta "Gussie” Cohen Goldberg (born 1864), (Elsa’s mother), who lived in NYC.”

Gift of the family of Joyce Hahn Kahl and Elsa Goldberg Hahn Reisman, JMM 2020.37.1

#DYK during the festival of Pesach (Passover), many Jews refrain from eating many foods they eat year round? To avoid eating levened grain products, people must cook entirely different foods than they usually might.

This cookbook for Pesach was published by Manischewitz, which makes many Pesach products including matzah, a flat cracker-like bread which is Kosher for Pesach. JMM 1988.007.001

Virtual Opening: in the absence of a proper mourning

April 1, 2021 at 7:00pm Eastern

Join us virtually at JMM as we officially open our latest project, in the absence of a proper mourning. This installation asks us to confront numerous difficult questions related to our connections to one another and transforms the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s public-facing facade into a site for collective mourning and communal care.

In this event we will hear from the artist, Tal Beery, on his inspiration and process in creating the piece. The event will offer a unique opportunity to hear the voices of all participants of the project.

Learn more about in the absence of a proper mourning.

#DYK from prehistoric times until the 20th century the Nile flooded on an extremely predictable schedule? All of Egyptian history until the most recent of times was based on the bounty and predictability of the Nile.

The story Jews celebrate during Pesach includes an episode in which God causes the Nile to turn to blood. Imagine the horror of the Egyptians when something defined by its predictibility suddenly changed.

#DYK March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day?

This is a colorized portrait of Staff Sergeant Isadore Jachman, a German-born, Baltimore-raised Jewish soldier in WWII. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his sacrifice defending a small town in Belgium from the Germans in 1945.

When his unit was pinned down by German artilary, Jachman dashed into enemy fire, grabbed the bazooka of a fallen comrade, and forced two tanks to retreat.

He is honored with a statue in Flamierge, Belgium and an Armory named after him in Owings Mills, Maryland. JMM 1996.112.001a-b.

#DYK March 10 is National No Smoking Day (in the UK)?

This sign once hung in the Ohr Knesseth Israel Sphard-Rogers Avenue Synagogue during a breif moment in history before indoor smoking was banned but in a time after people needed reminders not to light a fire on Shabbat.

A 1993 article in The Baltimore Sun says that when this synagogue merged with the Beth Jacob Synagogue, its objects went into the collection of the Jewish Historical Society. The example the arcticle gives is this very sign. Rogers Avenue Synagogue Collection, JMM 1993.052.074.
