The canyon is about 5km (could be more, or less) from the gate of the park. You don’t see until you’re actually there there. At the edge. You park your car before even seeing it. It feels like it takes an hour to leave the car and walk to the edge to see this mars like wonder. Fish river canyon left me in awe.

An old man in Swakopmund, Namibia told us about a scenic route to get to Ai-Ais. When people say ‘scenic’ you can bet the route is also going to be challenging. You will find the beauty but you will also earn it.
.
We left Luderitz on really good tarmac, took a right at Aus. Drove to Rosh Pinah, a mining town where all houses look the same. A couple clicks after Rosh Pinah, we took a left and consequently kissed the tarmac bye bye. It’s also where we last saw cars regularly.
.
The route took us into valleys and hills browned by dust and time. The grass was brown too. One car passes us and we meet another. We take a left through a gate that warns us of potential explosive use as they are making the road. We stop to evaluate our life choices then put Luanda to drive. The road has been blasted through high hills and twists following the Orange river. I look left, and see South Africa. The Orange river is the border. Sometimes the road passes far enough from the river, a comfortable distance. Sometimes, there’s nothing between us and the river.
.
As the golden sun sets over the brown landscape, a car passes us. Hope. We don’t want to drive in the dark but a sunset this beautiful is worth risking it all for.

It was our first sunset in Walvis Bay, Namibia and my first time on Namibian sand dunes. I was excited to go up and shoot the sunset with @the_mentalyst & @joshkisamwa. I wasn’t dressed right and the cold wind slapped my face so bad that I got an instant headache. I almost cried. But at least I got a photo of Tj looking all cute and focused. Lol.

Day 101. Homecoming!!!
.
It’s been a long time since we left home but we’ve had a successful mission and we’re a short distance from home. Here’s a plan, if you wanna drive the last 200km with us please join us in Namanga on 11th (Wednesday), July in Namanga at 9am. We’ll drive to Nairobi and catch a coffee or lunch. Just to be clear, we’re not offering transport or the coffee. Lol. It’s a hang out.
.
If you’re in the plan please get in touch with @mwarv as he’s got all the details.

How smooth are those colors. It was a cloudy morning in Deadvlei, Namibia and the small pockets of space in the clouds allowed the sun to piece thru, creating these gradients on the dunes that I’m in love with.

Namaqualand, Namibia/South Africa

Namaqualand is an arid region of Namibia and South Africa, extending along the west coast over 600 miles.

Namaqualand is popular with both local and international tourists during early springtime, when for a short period this normally arid area becomes covered with a kaleidoscope of colour during the flowering season. This is known throughout South Africa as the Namaqualand daisy season, when orange and white daisies, as well as hundreds of other flowering species, spring up from a previously barren landscape.

Last September in Trinidad I celebrated having visited my 50th country and wrote a post (find it by clicking here) listing the nations I’d been to and linking to some stories I had shared about them.

This weekend I’ve hit the next interval with Cyprus being my 60th country!

Here are the places I’ve been in the past 8 months that have gotten me from 50 to 60:

50. Trinidad and Tobago

51. Puerto Rico (some people might not count this since it is technically part of the U.S, but as it is not a State and has a very different culture, I do)

52. St. Kitts and Nevis

53. South Africa

54. Namibia

55. Zambia

56. Botswana

57. Saudi Arabia

58. Qatar

59. Egypt

60. Cyprus

I’ve also revisited a few countries in the meantime: Rwanda, Tanzania, and the UAE.

It has been interesting to see the number continuing to increase, especially as I am realizing that more and more I’m feeling inclined to visit familiar places again.  I decided to move back to the UAE, want to spend more time in Tanzania, and am thinking of visiting family in Germany and friends in Israel.  Of course, there are many new places I want to see- and hope to get to them sometime soon!  It will be an interesting balance to see how I spend my future travels.  I’ll keep you updated : )
