Draco was excited for his friends to come over. Despite seeing them throughout the whole semester at Hogwarts, Draco was still looking forward to spending countless summer days with them. Hearing the door open, Draco zoomed down the stairs as he heard three distinct voices. “Guys!” he cheered as he saw his friends’ faces light up with a smile. Because both Narcissa and Lucius were gone, the four children were free to roam the manor and its gardens as they pleased. With the heat making it impossible to run around, the children decided to have a water fight. After persuading the elves to provide them with an unending supply of snacks and treats, the four children began chasing each other about the gardens, spraying water in each other’s faces. “Come and get me, Blaise!” Pansy yelled before shrieking as Blaise sprayed water all over her causing the young girl to laugh loudly. Draco was currently hiding behind one of the bushes, preparing to ambush Theo who was standing around, looking to find his next target. Just as Draco was about to shoot, he heard the car door close and realised his parents must have been home now. Standing up in excitement, Draco failed to notice Theo’s smirk as the young boy soaked him.

Because he didn’t want to be soaking like his son, Lucius instantly held both palms up in surrender when he approached the gardens. “Woah, Woah! I’m the good guy!” Lucius warned playfully, wiggling his eyebrows at the young children. “Hi, Mr Malfoy” Pansy smiled before directing her attention to Mrs Malfoy who was still standing by the car. It was then that Draco remembered where his parents had just come from. “Wait!” your brother cried. “Is she really here?” he smiled, looking up at his father. Lucius simply nodded as he looked in his wife’s direction and saw you come out of the car. It had been a while since Draco’s friends had seen you, especially with you being in Beauxbatons, France during the school semesters. “Is who here?” Blaise asked, looking back and forth between Draco and Lucius finding himself growing more curious. “My sister, duh! Who else?” Draco smiled as he dropped the water toys and ran straight towards the car in your direction.

When Pansy saw you step out of the car, she didn’t need much persuasion to follow Draco and run over towards you. Growing up as an only child, Pansy found herself looking up to you as a big sister. The young girl adored spending time with you, which was tough given how infrequently she saw you. Even though she was Draco’s friend, she would constantly come to the manor to see you. Just you. “Wait for us!” Theo called out as he and Blaise headed over to follow their friends. Seeing your brother run towards you, with his friends closely behind, you couldn’t help but smirk in delight at all the attention. Even though Draco was an irritating little brother that drove you crazy from time to time, you still loved him. “Wow, would you look at what we have here!” you teased, earning a subtle glare from your mother. You had only just arrived home and planned to annoy your brother relentlessly. “Hi, baby dragon,” you smiled as you hugged your brother before turning your attention to his friends. Noticing Pansy’s huge smile, you quickly offered the girl a hug, which she happily reciprocated with glee. You loved spending time with Pansy. She was nothing but adorable. A little bit of a tomboy, but sweet nonetheless.

Theo couldn’t help but grin in enjoyment as Draco’s childhood nickname was mentioned. “Baby dragon?” he asked, folding his arms and looking at Draco, mocking him. “Shut up, Theo” Draco grumbled before being interrupted by his mother. “Now, now Draco. That’s not kind,” she scolded him before joining her husband in the gardens. As Narcissa made her way toward Lucius, she was shocked when he started to drench her in water, causing Narcissa to shriek at how cold the water was. “Ah! Lucius- you little!”, she started before chasing her husband around the gardens attempting to soak him back. Laughing loudly at the sight of your parents’ actions, you very quickly chased after them assisting your mother in seeking her revenge. It wasn’t long before the remaining children followed suit and started to drench Lucius in water causing the grown man to pout. “Alright! Alright! I surrender! Ah- Y/N! How dare you turn your back on me? What happened to you being Daddy’s girl, huh?” Lucius mocked, causing you to roll your eyes at him. “You should have thought about that before you soaked Mum!” you retorted, sticking your tongue out at your father causing Lucius to fake his hurt expression.

“See, Lu. I told you,” Narcissa smirked. “I’m Y/N’s favourite!” she smiled before wrapping her arm around you and hugging you. Hugging your mother, you couldn’t help but smile. You truly had missed your family, especially this semester. So it was wonderful knowing how easy it was for you to slip back into the groove of things. Noticing your father’s pout, you pulled away from your mother to hug him before kissing him softly on the cheek causing his frown to turn upside down and showcase a smile once more. “You’re both my favourites,” you emphasised.

“But she loves me more!” Draco interrupted. “Nuh-uh! Y/N loves me more!” Pansy repeated, mocking the younger blonde boy. “What? You’re not even her real sister! Besides, we all know Y/N loves us more! We are her favourite boys!”, Theo argued before nodding towards Blaise who smiled in agreement. “Yeah! We’re much less annoying-”, Blaise started before shrieking when the cold water made contact with his back. Turning around and catching you standing there, one hand on your hip as you giggled at his reaction, you very quickly ran away when you realised you were in for it. As the younger children chased you around the garden, your parents couldn’t help but laugh at how quickly you surrendered once they caught up to you.

“Alright, alright! Hey! Okay! I love you all very much! Quit it, Draco!”, you begged before pulling your brother down onto the grass by his ankles. Once Draco was down for the count, you very quickly ran away from the rest of the children before making a spontaneous decision. Clearly, they weren’t looking to stop the water fight anytime soon, not unless they were deemed victorious. Noticing that mischievous look in your eyes, Narcissa very quickly warned you against whatever you were thinking. “Y/N Narcissa Malfoy. Don’t you dare-” she started, but it was too late.

Jumping into the pool, the four children looked at you in shock. They knew you were a risk-taker but this was crazy! “Your sister is so cool!” Pansy mumbled to Draco who simply nodded his head as he was still stunned by your actions. That was the thing Draco loved about you. You were the brave one. The one person in his life he could always rely on. No matter what. “Ha! Ha! I won!” you cheered knowing there was no way they would copy you. You thought wrong! Quickly swimming out of the way, all four children floated up laughing at how cool the water in the pool felt. “Ha! Ha! Now we won too!” Pansy smiled as she swam towards you and hugged you once more. You hurriedly got out of the pool after noticing your father chuckling in the background as he went into the manor and dried yourself off with one of the towels nearby. “Y/N!” Narcissa scolded, even though you could tell she was being playful. As you spent the rest of the evening with your little brother and his friends, smiling as they told you stories of their time at Hogwarts before they insisted on hearing about your time at Beauxbatons instead.

Standing in the doorway of your childhood bedroom, Lucius couldn’t believe his eyes. In front of him, there you sat. In front of the vanity, fiddling with your earrings, your tongue slightly sticking out to the corner of your mouth as you finally managed to get them on.

You smiled as you looked in the mirror; you looked beautiful, and your father thought the exact same. Looking in the mirror you saw your father leaning against the doorframe. You turned around to face him with a huge smile plastered on your face. Standing up to twirl around in your dress, giggling at how it floated even after you stopped twirling.

“How do I look, Dad?”, you asked. However, Lucius couldn’t look at you. Not because he didn’t want to. But because he feared that if he did, he wouldn’t be able to stop crying. “Daddy?”, you asked again, this time cupping his face with your hands forcing you to look at him, just like he always did for you when you were crying and didn’t want to show it. “You look beautiful. Absolutely divine”, he mumbled as he wiped his left eye clean from the tears that welled up. “Dad”, you smiled. “Please don’t cry. I’ll always be your girl first, you know that”, you reminded him. Nodding his head, Lucius opened his mouth to say something before your mother walked into the room, holding your bridal bouquet.

Noticing that her husband looked like he had been crying, Narcissa quickly took charge of the scene. “No tears from either one of you right now. Y/N, you’ll end up ruining your makeup. And we all know that if you start crying,” she directed at Lucius, “then I will start crying as well”, she joked. You couldn’t help but chuckle at your mother’s words. Handing you your bouquet, your mother took one last look at you, checking if your veil was on straight, before leaving the room to go and join the rest of the guests. Taking one last moment to soak it all in, you looked back at your childhood bedroom and smiled at what was to come. Turning to face your father, you wrapped your arm with his as he led you outside the manor and into the ceremonial grounds. Now standing in the hallway, hidden from your fiance, soon to be husband, it suddenly felt real. Noticing your change in expression, Lucius kissed your head softly before tightening his grip on you. Not to hurt you, but to remind you that he was still here for you, and if you wanted to cancel this whole thing, he would gladly go out and do that. Lucius was the kind of father who would do anything for his daughter. You were lucky to have him.

“Y/N?”, he asked. “Are you sure you want to do this? Because, Princess, I can just-” “No,” you shook your head. “I want to do this. I want to marry him. I love Blaise. I really do. I’m just nervous about tripping on my dress as we walk down, I think”, you chuckled to lighten the mood as you took a sip of your water. Smiling at your words, Lucius just kissed the back of your hand before caressing it with his thumb, “I’m not going to let you fall. I promise.”

And he didn’t. The ceremony was perfect as could be. You noticed several guests started to tear up during your vows. You couldn’t help but feel all emotional as Blaise proclaimed his love for you. You didn’t even need to hear his words to know this. You just needed to look in his eyes. His eyes told the whole story. Now you and Blaise were dancing the night away, enjoying your first dance as husband and wife. In the corner of the room, your parents sat contently admiring you two.

Look at the two of you dancin’ that way

Lost in the moment and each other’s face

So much in love, you’re alone in this place

Like there’s nobody else in the world

Blaise twirled you around and dipped you, causing you to giggle at the sensation. As he dipped you, he leant down forwards to kiss you, which you happily reciprocated with a smile. The guests swooned at the sight of you two whilst your friends cheered. The gardens may have been filled with several guests, but to you and Blaise, it felt like there was no one there other than the two of you. And you could see that in your eyes. Lucius could recognise that look from a mile away. It was how he looked at Narcissa on their wedding day. Lucius still looked at her that way. He had that look in his eyes on the day you were born. Lucius found himself reminiscing over that day.

I was enough for her not long ago

I was her number one, she told me so

As Lucius walked you down the aisle, his arm wrapped around yours, he felt a strong sense of deja-vu. He was back in the gardens with you. But this time, you were only one and a half, giggling as you took your first steps toward your dadda. “C’mon, baby! You can do it”, Lucius cheered, extending his arms out to you. Behind you was your mother. Narcissa was crouching down with her arms outstretched over you, assuring you that she would catch you if you fell. That neither parent would let any harm come to you. Not if they had a say about it. Lucius’s smile grew as you took one step after the other. Lucius twirled you around in his arms before gently bouncing you up and down, praising you for taking your first steps. “Well done, baby!” he smiled. “Dadda’s so proud of you.” “My Dadda”, you squealed, repeating him. “Yes, baby. Your Dadda.”

And she still means the world to me, just so you know

So be careful when you hold my girl

Time changes everything, life must go on

And I’m not gonna stand in your way

“You take good care of my little girl, Blaise. You hear me?” Lucius demanded as he watched you walk down the stairs and head over to where your date was standing. “Lucius!” Narcissa scolded. “Leave the poor boy alone! Now Y/N, Blaise. Stand together, please. Oh, don’t you two look beautiful”, your mother cooed as she snapped several pictures of you and Blaise together. “Hmm, maybe we should get a few more outside in the gardens”, she mumbled to herself as she lightly pushed the pair of you out with her. “Mum!” you whined. You just wanted to go now. You didn’t want any more pictures. “Entertain your mother for a minute”, Lucius whispered. Taking the camera from his wife, Lucius was ordered to take a few more photos of the happy couple whilst Narcissa directed the teenagers on how to pose. “Blaise, dear? Wrap your arm around Y/N. Like this,” she advised. “Narcissa”, Lucius grumbled under his breath. “Oh hush, Lucius. Just take the pictures. Yes. Perfect. Oh, don’t you two look beautiful”, Narcissa cooed as she waved you two goodbye once your father had captured as many pictures as possible. Enough to fill up at least three photo albums. At least.

But I loved her first, I held her first

And a place in my heart will always be hers

From the first breath she breathed

When she first smiled at me

“Cissa”, Lucius whispered as he tried to wake his wife up. “Cissa!” he repeated. “What? Lucius?! What is it?“ Narcissa snapped. She’d just gotten you to nap, and Narcissa was dozing off until Lucius woke her up. “Whatever this is, it better be worth it”, she grumbled as she sat up, rubbing the sleep out from her eyes. Sitting up and stretching her arms, Narcissa yawned before staring at her husband and waiting to hear the reason why he had woken her up in the first place. “What?” she whined. “Lu-” “She smiled”, Lucius grinned. Narcissa so badly wanted to slap that goofy grin off of his face. “What?” she asked in frustration. “She smiled at me!” Lucius repeated. Narcissa just rolled her eyes at her husband, but the smile on her face showed that she was happy. Lying back down, Narcissa sighed in peace as she closed her eyes and heard the sound of Lucius’s laughter fade as she felt sleep take over. “She smiled. She smiled at her Dadda. "Oh, I love you so much, Y/N. More than you will ever truly know.”

I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she’d find you someday

“I hate boys!” you cried into your tub of ice cream. You grabbed the squirty cream can and poured it over your ice cream before taking another spoonful. You despised it. You hated being furious, but you were still disturbed. You loathed being used. Most importantly, you hated how stupid you felt. You hated how you didn’t see the signs; instead, you just drove straight through them. They were there. You know that now. Helping himself to some of your ice cream, Lucius hummed in response. Nodding his head, he couldn’t help but feel proud of how his suspicions of this boy were correct. But Lucius hated knowing you were in pain. Lucius would never forgive himself if he let you get hurt a second time. “Boys are icky”, he mused, causing you to chuckle. “Yeah. You’re right, Dad. Boys are icky!” you repeated before taking another spoonful of your ice cream. “I always am”, your father quipped as he booped you on the nose, causing you to smile and laugh even louder. Leave it to Lucius to always make you smile. Even when you were devastatingly upset. However, when you told your father that you were now dating Blaise, Lucius couldn’t help but smile because he knew this boy would do right by you. Blaise was one of the good ones. Blaise was a keeper.

But it’s still hard to give her away

I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you

Be the same freckle face kid that I knew

The one that I read all those fairytales to

And tucked into bed all those nights

“And then the princess lived happily ever after”, he finished, closing the book shut. Lucius turned on your nightlight after noticing you were sleeping. Wrapping you up in your duvet covers to ensure you were safe and warm, Lucius kissed you on the head as he exited your room. Making sure you had your cuddly toy nearby to keep you safe, Lucius left your bedroom, wishing you nothing but sweet dreams. Recently, Lucius had been working late. So by the time he arrived home, you would be fast asleep. Or at least you were supposed to be. But when Lucius saw you annoying your mother, insisting that she read you story after story, Lucius decided that he would tell you a story instead. You loved it when your mother read to you, but you preferred your father’s storytelling more. Lucius would go out and do all the funny voices. He was definitely very interactive when it came to storytime. Storytime with your father was one of your fondest childhood memories - hands down.

And I knew the first time I saw you with her

It was only a matter of time

“Hi, I’m Blaise. Do you wanna play with me?” four-year-old Blaise asked you. Smiling up at the boy, you eagerly nodded as you followed him towards the toy box in the corner of the room. Countless hours flew by whilst you and Blaise entertained yourselves with the lego bricks. When your father came home and found you playing with the Zabini’s boy, he wasn’t too keen on the idea of you two being left alone, even if you were only children. “Hi Daddy!” you called out to him, flashing him a smile. “Daddy! This is my friend, Blaise. Blaise, this is my Dad”, you introduced your new friend. Lucius smiled when Blaise extended his hand out for a handshake. When Lucius left the two of you alone, he quickly confided in his wife about this dilemma. “I don’t want them left alone together”, he whispered. “Lucius!” Narcissa scolded, “They’re children. Let them be.” Lucius glanced at the children playing in the other room again as he saw his wife walk away, mumbling under his breath about how he was keeping an eye on them.

I loved her first, I held her first

And a place in my heart will always be hers

It was Father’s day, and you couldn’t wait to see your father’s reaction to your gift. You just knew he would be over the moon about it. Lucius was never one to question his masculinity. So you knew this gift would be perfect. “Well, come on! Don’t just sit there”, you teased. “Open it!” you insisted. Watching Lucius react to the present was a gift itself. “What?! No way!” Lucius smiled as he tore open the gift wrapping. Inside the box sat a matching bracelet, similar to your own. You always loved matching your father. Sometimes even more than your mother. Before Lucius could open his mouth to thank you, you attacked him with the biggest bear hug ever and laughed when he kissed you on the head, letting you know how much he truly loved it. Lucius loved presents. He loved giving them and enjoyed receiving them. But the best gift of all was you; everything else was simply a bonus.

From the first breath she breathed

When she first smiled at me

I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she’d find you someday

But it’s still hard to give her away

I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed

When she first smiled at me

I knew the love of a father runs deep

Someday you might know what I’m goin’ through

“Now you know how it feels, Blaise, my boy”, Lucius chuckled as he patted his son-in-law on the back. His granddaughter was getting ready for her first big date, on prom night, no less. Blaise was anxious about the whole thing, but the minute his daughter’s date showed up, he swooped into overprotective-daddy mode. It was amusing to see. You simply smiled at your husband’s behaviour before cooing over your daughter’s appearance. She looked as beautiful as ever. It was clear that beauty ran in the family. Narcissa felt very emotional as she saw how grown-up her granddaughter looked and made no effort to hide it. Lucius just smiled as he looked around the room. He was a lucky man.

When a miracle smiles up at you

I loved her first

Now, dancing with his daughter on her wedding day, Lucius couldn’t help but feel so proud. Even though you were starting a brand new chapter of your life, Lucius knew he wouldn’t be left behind. You were not going to let that happen. You loved your father very dearly. You cherished him. “I love you, Dad”, you smiled. “I love you too, Y/N. I always have,” he started, “and always will”, you cheekily smiled, finishing his sentence. Lucius just chuckled before resting his chin on top of your head as the two of you continued your dance. When Blaise walked up to the pair of you, Lucius pulled away to place your hand on top of Blaise’s. “You take good care of my little girl, alright, Blaise?” he warned even though it was clear he was happy for you. “I promise”, Blaise smiled before pulling you closer to him as the pair of you took the dancefloor to have your first dance as husband and wife.

Even though you were now a Zabini, you were still a Malfoy. You would always be Lucius’s little girl until the end of time.

Braiding your hair neatly and gently, Narcissa smiled as she admired your reflection in the mirror. There you sat, on the chair fiddling, with the hem of your skirt. It was a new year at Hogwarts for your brother as he was to start his 5th year. For you, however, this was to be your 1st. You were nervous; your mother was the same. The only difference was your reasoning behind your worries. You were nervous yet excited at the possibilities to come your way as you took your first step toward becoming a fine witch. Hopefully, one as talented as your mother was at your age. On the other hand, Narcissa was terrified at the prospect of you leaving the house. Despite knowing that your brother would be there to keep his eye on you, it did not ease Narcissa’s distraught woes.

Watching both children get on the train with a smile as they turn back to wave goodbye, Narcissa would be lying if she said she didn’t feel her heart grow heavy at the visual of going back home to a quiet home. Although the manor itself wasn’t empty, with Lucius being there, Narcissa couldn’t help but dread the thought of it all; to succumb to such loneliness. Narcissa thought to herself on the journey back home, just how much she would miss the sound of your melodic voice. The sound of your footsteps pattering around the second floor. The sound of your nonstop bickering with your brother, and sometimes even your father. But not with your mother. You and Narcissa were like two peas in a pod. Always so similar yet so different. No conflict of interest could be found from either of you when together. As Narcissa walked into the manor, she found herself back in your room. Grazing her fingers over the fabric of your bedsheets before sitting down on the bed, reaching out to cuddle your childhood teddy, Narcissa found herself humming a familiar song.

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning

Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

I watch her go with a surge of that well known sadness

And I have to sit down for a while

The feeling that I’m losing her forever

Narcissa felt silly indeed as her emotions clouded her better judgement. But, as a mother, she couldn’t help but feel stressed at the prospect of her daughter returning as a stranger, instead of her little girl. The little girl who was adamant about being so like her. Even if that meant sharing the same tastes in clothes, music, and colours. Resting her chin on the teddy bear’s head, Narcissa smiled to herself when she caught a glimpse of the emerald pendant she once owned before deciding you wanted it in your possession instead. Narcissa smiled at the memory of you complimenting the appearance of the jewel the first time you saw it. “Tis’ gween is ‘eally p’etty Mama,” you smiled as you grew fascinated by it. Titling the pendant’s gem in your hands as your mother held you in her arms, you cooed in awe at how highly reflective the pendant was when faced with the sun peeking in through the window. Your eyes lit up as you grew entranced by the smaller shiny diamonds that you could see glimmering within the pendant. It didn’t take much persuasion for you to convince your mother to give it to you. Even though you would inherit your mother’s jewels upon her passing, you still wanted them now. Not just because it was pretty, but because it was a part of your mother. A piece so worthy and valuable that you intended to hold dear to your heart. Narcissa smiled sadly when she realised you hadn’t taken it with you. Perhaps when you were to return, you would no longer desire it. Perhaps, you would give it back to your mother and thereby prevent her from entering your world. Maybe this was it, Narcissa mused. Wiping away the tears threatening to spill down her cheeks, Narcissa chose to think positively as she played the sound of your laughter on a loop in her head, refusing to let her diminish herself to such a small role in your life. It wasn’t forever she reminded herself. You would come back soon, and all would be well again… right?

And without really entering her world

I’m glad whenever I can share her laughter

That funny little girl

Narcissa found herself walking out of your bedroom now, but still holding the teddy bear in her hands. She soon ended up in the gardens and decided to sit down and enjoy the tranquillity of it all. Originally planning to tend to her flowers, Narcissa felt no urge to get to work today. At the moment, she felt as though she was overwhelmed by a slump. A growing slump that had no intention of surpassing. Or at least not for today. Gazing around the gardens, Narcissa found herself entranced by the daffodils: flowers she never truly cared for. At least not until she had you.

“She needs a middle name, Narcissa. It is only fair after all,” Lucius argued as he held you in his arms, rocking you back and forth, enjoying the feeling of pride as he was welcomed into fatherhood once more. “Well, she won’t be having mine as hers,” Narcissa quipped, as she stretched her limbs, feeling very tied up. “Why not?” he asked, confused by why his wife was so against the idea. “I don’t like my name,” she whispered. “Because I don’t want my daughter to grow up hating me. Hating the fact that she and I share a name. I do not want to be a disappointment to her. A burdensome disappointment,” she rambled before stopping when she felt her throat choke up. Since you were fast asleep, Lucius carefully placed you in the centre of your crib. “You don’t know that for certain, my dearest,” he sighed as he gently held his wife’s hand. Lucius decided to restart the talk after noticing that he was getting nowhere with it. “You know, daffodils are beautiful. Especially during the spring.” Narcissa simply hummed in response, not knowing what Lucius was getting at. “Do you know what they symbolise, these flowers?” he asked, pointing towards the flowers neatly perched within their vase. Narcissa pondered for a minute before shaking her head in response. Sitting on the bed comfortably near his wife, Lucius laid on his side, propping his head up with his hand, bending his arm to form a sturdy triangular hold. “They symbolise new beginnings. I guarantee you, my love, you will be a much better mother than your own. I promise you that.” Hearing how confident Lucius sounded, Narcissa just smiled at how easily relaxed she felt. “Who knows?” he mused, “Perhaps you will be best friends. I do not doubt that for a second, and neither should you.”

And that you were.

Narcissa had not laughed loudly in so long until she heard you mutter your first word: “Mama.” “Oh come on!”, your Auntie Trixie moaned when she heard the news. “No, Y/N/N!” she teased, “Your first word was supposed to be Trixie!” Lucius scoffed at his sister-in-law’s complaints. “And what are you laughing at, Malfoy?” she sneered. “If anything, her first words were more likely to be Mama or Dadda. And since Y/N has chosen her mother, I can guarantee you Bellatrix that her next word will be Dadda,” he sneered back at the woman. Usually, Narcissa would scold the pair of them for acting so childish, but right now she was far too content with you. She didn’t know it then, but she knew it now: the pair of you were going to be the greatest of friends. Until the end of time.

Slipping through my fingers all the time

I try to capture every minute

Walking aimlessly down the halls, Narcissa found herself standing in front of her favourite, most cherished item of all. On the mantelpiece in front of her sat a family photograph. She had it taken on your first birthday. Draco sat on the floor in front, laying on his stomach, propping his head up with both hands. He looked like the wicked little angel he prided himself on being. Whilst Lucius and Narcissa smiled merrily at the camera. Smiling at the photograph, Narcissa loved how adorable you looked. Sitting in your mother’s lap, flashing that cheeky little grin, Narcissa found herself tearing up at the thought of you not returning home for Christmas this year. Perhaps you wanted to stay with your friends instead. Narcissa couldn’t help but feel empty by missing a family photo this year. She knew she couldn’t handle the thought of taking one without you. The idea of photographing you without you in her arms was too much for your mother to bear. Ever since you had entered this world, Narcissa hadn’t let go of you until now.

The feeling in it

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Do I really see what’s in her mind

Each time I think I’m close to knowing

When Narcissa returned from her day out with her sisters, you were in your room. They had spent the day shopping, and just as she had always done, Narcissa headed straight to your room to show you all the things she had bought. Narcissa was very excited to show you what she had got for you rather than what she had gotten herself. She heard you say a quiet "come in” when she knocked on the door. “Hello, my darling,” Narcissa called out as she closed the door behind her. Turning to face you, she found you preoccupied with a book, which you put down when you saw your mother holding a bag of what you assumed carried the dresses. “Dad told me you went out. What did you get?” you asked excitedly before playfully pulling your mother towards the bed so you could see what was inside.

As Narcissa showed you the items she bought herself, she waited with anticipation for your response about the dress she bought for you. Expecting your smile, Narcissa was greeted with an expressionless stare. “Do you like it?” your mother asked, assuming you were caught up in a daydream instead. “Uh- yeah. It’s nice,” you answered before returning to your book. Narcissa frowned when she heard of your response. “You know, Y/N. You don’t have to like the same things as me, my love. You’re allowed to have your own opinions,” she explained. Narcissa had tried so hard to let you grow up in that mindset. A mindset she could never afford from being Druella’s daughter. Sighing, you put the book down before looking at the dress. “It is pretty, but I don’t like the colour,” you commented before giggling. “It’s too yellow,” you explained as you scrunched your nose. Glancing back at the dress, Narcissa found herself disagreeing. But maybe that was because she refused to acknowledge that you were now growing up. Nonetheless, Narcissa had no intention of keeping your mind trapped from developing your own thoughts and opinions on the world around you. But it was rather emotional knowing that you were growing.

She keeps on growing

Slipping through my fingers all the time

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning

Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

Finally, as the Christmas holidays approached, Narcissa was adamant on being one of the first parents there to collect their children from the school term. “Cissa!” your father called out. “Slow down, love. The train hasn’t even arrived yet!” But it was no use as his words had fallen on empty ears. Searching high and low through the crowds, Narcissa made her way towards the train before smiling in relief when she saw you. As you waved goodbye to your friends, Narcissa dreaded the thought of seeing your smile fade once you noticed her. As you acknowledged her once more.

However, when she saw your smile grow wider and reach your eyes, just like always, Narcissa felt her heart flutter knowing that she still had you. That you still wanted her. That you didn’t want to rid yourself of her. Extending her arms out to you, Narcissa cried for the first time in a while, when she held you just like she had done the minute you came into this world. Just as she had always intended to do, until her last dying breath. But she knew that she would see you again. That no matter how time intervened with the relationship you shared with her, you would never slip away.

“Evelyn, slow down. You’re going to wear out the carpet”, Abraxas grumbled as he tried to read the paper. However, Abraxas would be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous. Childbirth was definitely not an easy task. “I can’t help it!” Evelyn screeched, throwing her hands up in the air out of frustration. “I’m scared”, she admitted. Hearing his wife’s concerns, Abraxas knew she was scared, and rightfully so. He could sense it from how shaky her breath sounded. Folding the paper, Abraxas stood up and stopped his wife from further pacing by wrapping his arms around her, keeping her glued to the floor. Evelyn could hear how shaky her breathing sounded as she rested her head on his chest. Soothing his wife, Abraxas drew circles on her back to help calm her down. Lucius was already a nervous wreck. There was no need for Evelyn to follow suit. “They’ll be fine”, Abraxas muttered as he rested his chin on his wife’s head, kissing her head softly. “It’s taking too long”, Evelyn complained as she pushed away from her husband. Wringing her hands, Evelyn started to pace again before being stopped by Lucius’s footsteps as he came through the door.

Judging by the smile in his son’s eyes, Abraxas could tell all was well, even if his face wasn’t showing it. Seeing her son’s solemn expression, Evelyn could feel the tears spilling out at the thought of Narcissa having lost her baby. However, when she saw Lucius laugh, Evelyn realised that she had been played like a fool. “Both Narcissa and the baby are fine”, Lucius smiled. Turning around at the sound of her husband’s laughter, Evelyn swatted his arm before pushing back her son as she rushed towards Narcissa, still feeling scared. Rolling his eyes at his wife, Abraxas congratulated his son. “Congratulations, my boy. You’re a father. Now, before your mother has my head, shall we go and meet the newest addition?” Abraxas asked as he followed Lucius to the room where Narcissa was currently sitting, holding her newborn baby.

Sitting there, looking as perfect as ever, was Narcissa. And in her arms was you: the newest member of the Malfoy family. Evelyn had beaten both her son and husband as they found her sitting next to Narcissa on the bed whilst both women cooed at the infant. “Oh, Narcissa,” Evelyn sighed happily. “She has your eyes, my dear.” “She does, doesn’t she?” Narcissa smiled, feeling so happy that her baby looked so like her. “Would you like to hold her, Evelyn?” Narcissa asked. Looking as if she had won the moon, Evelyn eagerly extended her arms out for Narcissa to pass her the baby. Despite not having held a baby in such a long time, it was second nature to the elder Malfoy. “Oh, you are so beautiful”, Evelyn cooed as she admired her granddaughter. Granddaughter. The word felt so foreign, yet so familiar. Heaven knows how badly Evelyn wanted a daughter of her own, but unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards for her. So when Lucius brought Narcissa home, Evelyn very quickly latched onto the girl after taking a strong liking to her. She didn’t tell anyone, but Evelyn had a feeling that the newest addition was going to be a girl. Call it a mother’s instinct. Or a grandmother’s instinct, in this case.

Noticing her husband’s presence in the doorway, Evelyn smiled at him before looking back at you. She was so entranced by you. She could already tell that the two of you were going to be the best of friends. Evelyn was so excited to become a grandmother. “How are you, my love?” Lucius murmured as he sat on the opposite side of the bed from his wife, relishing the view while seeing his father leaning against the doorway. The view of his wife holding a newborn. It was a comforting sight, especially after Evelyn had Lucius when she was told the possibilities of her having another child were slim. “How are you, Narcissa dear?”, Abraxas asked the new mother. Narcissa just smiled at her father-in-law. “I’m tired. But I’m happy”, she sighed peacefully as she held Lucius’s hand. Nodding in approval to the new parents, Abraxas made his way to where his wife now stood rocking the baby gently. He couldn’t wait to hold his grandson. “Alright, Eve. You’ve had your fun now. Let me hold my grandson”, Abraxas teased.

“Grandson?”, Evelyn smiled, mocking her husband. Abraxas was surprised by his wife’s behaviour as he glanced back and forth between Narcissa and Evelyn before his eyes landed on Lucius’s. Looking at his son, he recognised that mischievous smirk, anywhere. “Wait? Do you mean-”, he started to ask. However, the look on his wife’s face revealed it all. Instead of a grandson, he had been blessed with a granddaughter. “Abraxas, meet your granddaughter”, Evelyn smiled as she gently passed you to your grandfather. Reaching out to hold you, Abraxas couldn’t help but smile. “Well, hello there little one. What a wonderful surprise?”, he teased, causing Evelyn to roll her eyes. She had been going on and on, nonstop about how certain she was that the new baby would be a girl. In fact, she was so certain that she had even gone out and bought a diamond tiara to celebrate the occasion. Girls were a rare breed in the Malfoy lineage. If you were to comb through the family history, you would find that the last girl born into the family was about three decades ago. Your birth was indeed very special. Worth thousands of tiaras.

Smiling at the sight of her husband holding his granddaughter for the first time, Evelyn felt complete. Here she was, praying and hoping that she would somehow have been blessed with a daughter of her own. But now, she was eternally grateful for what she could see right in front of her. Evelyn snuck out of the room as she watched her son and husband quarrel over whose turn it was to hold you next. She reappeared a minute later with a package wrapped in a nice little ribbon in her hands. Handing the box to her daughter-in-law, Narcissa looked at Evelyn with confusion painted all over her face. “Evelyn,” Narcissa tutted. “You shouldn’t have!”, she smiled, looking up at her mother-in-law. “Oh, don’t be silly, dear. This is a very special gift, for a very special little girl”, Evelyn smiled gleefully as she tried to weasel you out of your father’s arms and into her own.

Holding you in her arms, Evelyn passed you back to your mother when you started to cry. “Oh, no Y/N love. Don’t cry, baby”, Evelyn cooed only to start giggling when you stopped crying the minute you were in your mother’s arms. “Y/N?”, Abraxas asked. Looking toward his father for his opinion, Lucius smiled when he heard his daughter’s name. A name fit for a princess. “I like it”, Abraxas hummed before playfully messing up his son’s hair. “Thank you, Father”, Lucius grumbled as he sorted out his hair, before making his way to where all three of his favourite girls were. Lucius scoffed as he examined the box, noting that you were only three hours old and already the proud owner of one of the most gorgeous, beautifully crafted tiaras he had ever seen. Narcissa gasped in shock at how marvellous the design was. “Oh, my Merlin. Evelyn!” Narcissa squealed in excitement causing Evelyn to laugh.

“Good luck trying to beat that one,” Abraxas teased his son. “Oh no, Abraxas darling. This is only from me. Not you,” she teased, causing Abraxas to raise an eyebrow and pout. “Good one, Mother,” Lucius chuckled. As his gaze wandered to the tiara carefully stored in the box, Lucius knew that he would soon be faced with a toddler throwing tantrums about wanting to wear it.
