“Some books carried for months were literally worn out by handling”

“I once spent half an afternoon listening to a vigorous dissertation on “Taras Bulba” by an ex-cowboy who had somewhere chanced upon the book. The American Library Association put many books into the hands of men who had never previously read much, or even suspected the existence of such things, and the reactions to some of the discoveries were simply epic. This man’s enthusiastically blasphemous and startling similes were enough to astound Gogolhimself. A few men had books which after reading they gave to others. Some books carried for months were literally worn out by handling, but were much treasured and carefully preserved.”
