#near drowning

LIVE

Your whumpee arrives washed up on a beach following a shipwreck. They cannot remember who they are or where they came from.

Some kind townsfolk take pity on them and take them in, aiding them in their recovery as well as offering them menial jobs to get them back on their feet. After a while, they easily settle into their new life, despite the initial anxiety of having to start their life again.

However, everything is thrown upside down when people arrive at the town… claiming that they’re from your characters past.

How long does it take for them to remember? What triggers the switch in your characters mind?

whump-with-wren:

Because drowning - or at least, almost drowning - is one of my favourite tropes. There’s so much you can do with it.

  • Whumpee isn’t able to swim/can’t swim well and is struggling in vain against being dragged under.
  • Alternatively, they’re being held under by someone and are struggling to escape.
  • Alternatively alternatively, they’re wounded and it’s making it difficult to move/fight to the surface.
  • Their panic at first, and then slowly becoming at peace as they run out of air.
  • Rescue!
  • Caretaker dragging the whumpee to the surface.
  • Whumpee unconscious, looking bedraggled and pathetic cos they’re soaking.
  • Can throw in some mouth to mouth if that’s your thing.
  • When they start to wake up they’re coughing and gasping and spewing water everywhere.
  • SHIVERING!
  • I love shivering whumpees, and being dragged from water is bound to make them shiver.
  • The Caretaker hugging them to keep them warm.
  • The whumpee shaking under a blanket, soaking wet.

I just… drowning fics man. I love them.

“Step right up, step right up distinguished guests! See the wonderful merman in it’s natural habitat!”

As the pirate in front of him continued to speak, Na'loon tried banging on the glass, attempting to get the attention of the human audience. Mermaids could hold their breath for up to 2 hours, 3 if absolutely necessary and it was rounding out to about 2 and a half hours since he had been forced into the tank. Aside from the obvious problems of being dragged away from his family, forced into a tiny glass tank, and being carted far, far away from any large body of water, there was one more.

Mermaids did need air to breathe.

And the tank didn’t have any air holes at the top like the one they transported him in. His strength was slowly leaving him and he was considering just letting go, just sinking to the bottom and dying. It would be better than this miserable life with the traveling circus that’s for sure.

But just as he closed his eyes, prepared to meet his doom, a loud creaking noise filled the tank. He glanced up, wondering what foolishness the pirate had engaged in now, only to gasp in shock as his hair was gripped tightly.

“Now then wonderful folks! You may be wondering how it’s scales feel! Not to worry, for a simple fee of 5 gold is all it takes to have a touch!”

Na'loon gritted his fangs. He wanted to scream.
