When two strangers show up at you and your father’s home, the night turns very eventful

Word Count: 1,319

A/N: This takes place in that one scene in Crimes of Grindewald and reader is about 15/16

You had been downstairs finishing up some of your chores with your father’s creatures when you heard the crash from upstairs. You knew he was home so you decided to let Newt deal with the problem upstairs. You figured it was just one of the Nifflers causing problems. You went back to finish feeding the Diricawls when Bunty stopped by.

“Your father asked for me to send you up to him when you’re finished here,” she said.

“Okay thanks,” you said, looking up from your work and smiling at her.

She nodded at you and waved goodbye, you returning the favor. You quickly finished up and then headed upstairs into the house.

You heard voices and some giggle that didn’t belong to your father. As you reached the living room, you saw your dad talking to two other people.

“Father?” you asked, hoping he could answer some questions about the strangers in your house.

Newt turned around after hearing your voice to look at you, “Oh Y/n,” he said, pulling you to stand next to him. He faced back to the others in the room, “Uh Y/n this is Queenie and Jacob. I met them in New York.

You looked at them and gave them a small wave.

“Oh this is the famous Y/n yo told us about,” the woman, Queenie said, “It’s very nice to finally meet you,” she smiled brightly at you.

“You too,” you mumbled. Like Newt, you were an awkward person, especially around people. You smiled at her again and then looked at Jacob, who did not seem to be acting very normal, “Is he alright?” you asked.

“Oh yes he’s fine,” Queenie responded, helping Jacob stand up straighter. She then turned to your father, “Shall we have dinner?”

~~~~~
You and your father were now sitting across from Jacob and Queenie. You could hardly eat because you were so focused on what Jacob was doing. He could barely eat and Queenie had to do almost everything for him. You could tell your father was trying hard not to notice either but it wasn’t working.
“Tina and I aren’t talking to each other,” Queenie explained.
“Why?” your father asked her, watching her tuck a napkin into Jacob’s shirt and sit in her own seat.
“She found out about Jacob and I,” she said, “And you know the laws. Not allowed to date or marry No-Majis.”
“I always thought that was ridiculous,” you said. It was the first thing you had contributed to the conversation tonight.
“Y/n ,” your father said softly. While he agreed with you, he didn’t need you chastising the person who was giving him the details he wanted on Tina.
“Sorry,” you mumbled, going back to eating your dinner.
“And anyways,” she continued, “She was all in a tizzy because of you.”
“Me?” your father asked, shocked.
“Yes you!” she exclaimed, “It was in Spellbound Newt.”
He looked over at you, confused and hoping you would have an answer for him but you were just as confused as him. You looked over at Queenie and gave her a confused look.
“I brought it for you to see,” she said, using her wand to pull the magazine out of nowhere and flip to a page with your father, your uncle Theseus, and Leta.
“Newt Scamander and fiance Leta Lestrange and brother Theseus with an unknown woman.”
“No that’s wrong,” Newt said quickly, “Theseus is marrying Leta.”
You had to suppress your giggles at the scene unfolding in front of you.
Queenie smiled at the realization that her sister’s crush wasn’t engaged, “Oh.”
It took her another second to realize that it wasn’t necessarily a good thing, “Oh dear.”
“What?” your father asked again.
“Well see, Tina read that and so she started dating someone else,” Queenie said quietly, “He’s an auror. His name is Achilles Tolliver.”
“I’ve heard of Tolliver,” you said, “He was mentioned in one of my classes at Hogwarts.”
Jacob started laughing and wheezing, causing you all to look over at him, “Tolliver?” he asked, in between laughs. He was wheezing so hard, you thought he might stop breathing.
“Are you sure he’s alright?” you asked, repeating your question from earlier.
“Of course he is sweetie,” Queenie said to you, wrapping her arm around Jacob who was already starting to calm down, “Anyways, we’re real excited to be here. It’s a special trip for us.”
She began to pour herself and Jacob a glass of wine, “You see, Jacob and I are getting married!” she exclaimed while giggling.
You looked over to your father, who seemed as surprised as ever by the news. You watched him look over to Jacob as he began to raise his glass.
“I’m marrying Jacob!” he said loudly, throwing the liquid on himself, making you gasp lightly and jump in your seat. Queenie then pulled out her wand, shooting confetti from the end.
Newt looked over to Queenie as she pulled the napkin from Jacob’s shirt and began to dry him off, “What? I have not,” she said.
“Will you stop reading my mind?” your father asked out loud.
You looked at the woman sitting next to you, “You’re a legilimens?” you asked. She nodded while continuing to read your father’s mind.
“That is an outrageous accusation,” she said, wiping off Jacob’s face more, “Look at him. He’s just happy.”
“So then you wouldn’t mind if I,” Your father started, standing up from the table and pulling out his wand, Queenie matching his actions.
“Please don’t,” she said, moving her arm in front of Jacob, who grabbed on to it.
“You’ve got nothing to fear if he wants to marry you,” Newt explained gently, “We can just lift the enchantment and he can tell us himself,” he continued, raising his want up to the other man.
Queenie slowly pulled her arm away from Jacob and he continued to look at her. She backed away from him, causing the man to look at you and your father’s directions. You hadn’t moved from your seat at the table but your father was ready to remove the enchantment Queenie put on him.
“Whatcha doing with that?” Jacob asked, chuckling, “Whatcha doing with that Mr. Scamander.”
Newt flicked his wand, “Surgito,” he said.
Jacob shook as the love enchantment was removed and he was back to normal. He took a deep breath before looking around the room.
“Congratulations on your engagement Jacob,” your father said.
“Wait what?” Jacob asked, clearly not knowing he was engaged. He looked at your father confused before he noticed he was looking up at Queenie, “Oh no,” he said.
You looked to the woman who was already packing up her stuff and heading for the door, too upset to stay and listen to Jacob begging her to. She grabbed her jacket and left the house, letting the door slam shut.
Jacob went after her but stopped and turned to your father, “It was nice seeing you,” he said to Newt. He glanced over at you, not realizing you were there before now, “And it was nice to meet you kid.”
You gave him an awkward smile.
“Also, where am I?” he asked.
“London,” you answered.
“Oh!” Jacob exclaimed, “I always wanted to go here!” he yelled as he left the house, following Queenie.
Once the door was shut, you looked over to your father, “So those are the friends you met in New York?”
He looked over to you, “Yes although, they weren’t that out of sorts when I met them.”
“Interesting,” you replied. You stood up from the table and pushed your chair in, “This has been a very eventful evening so I should be going to bed.”
Before Newt could respond, you were already running upstairs and to your room. He heard your door open and close shut. He sighed and plopped back down in his chair, shaking his head.
You decided to take a sick Bowtruckle to bed with you, without your father knowing.
Word Count: 524
A/N: Uhh this is my first HP fic and my first time writing for Newt! Hope you enjoy! Reader is about 15/16
Earlier in the day, you noticed that Poppy, one of your father’s bowtruckles, wasn’t feeling well. You suspected she had the same cold that Pickett had gotten over a few days ago. You had heard your father say that Pickett just needed body warmth so you decided you would just keep her with you like he had done. Before you got ready for bed, you snuck back downstairs and grabbed her and brought her back up to your room. You got into your pajamas and into bed. Newt was still up but since you were “sleeping” he wouldn’t disturb you.
Earlier in the day, you noticed that Poppy, one of your father’s bowtruckles, wasn’t feeling well. You suspected she had the same cold that Pickett had gotten over a few days ago. You had heard your father say that Pickett just needed body warmth so you decided you would just keep her with you like he had done. Before you got ready for bed, you snuck back downstairs and grabbed her and brought her back up to your room. You got into your pajamas and into bed. Newt was still up but since you were “sleeping” he wouldn’t disturb you.
You pulled Poppy out of your pocket and she climbed up your arm and rested on your shoulder. You carefully leaned over to grab the book and your wand resting on your nightstand. You opened up the book to the page you left off on.
“Lumos,” you said, using your wand as a reading light so you could read aloud to Poppy and so you didn’t strain your eyes. You kept your voice quieter so your father wouldn’t hear.
~~~~~

Newt was finally on his way up to bed himself when he passed by your door and noticed a light coming from underneath. It didn’t look like the normal lamp or candle light that you would forget to deal with if you were extremely tired so he knew you were still up.

You heard the footsteps walk by your door and then stop. You knew you were about to be caught reading late and with one of the creatures so you quickly tried to put Poppy away and extinguish your wand before your father came in. The doorknob turned and the door opened before you had a chance.

“What are you doing up?” Newt asked, stepping into the room.

“Reading,” you said, trying to block Poppy from his view.

“I see you have a friend with you,” he said, walking over to the bed and sitting next to you.

You shrugged, “She has a cold,” you explained.

Your father nodded slowly, “So you were keeping her warm right?”

“Yes,” you said, “And I thought I could read out loud to her. She was actually enjoying it.”

Newt looked at the small bowtruckle now trying to hide under your pillow.

“You are too much like me for your own good,” he said, resting his hand on the top of your head.

“Well I am your daughter,” you said back, giving him a cheeky smile.

“Sadly yes,” he joked, ruffling your hair.

“So can she stay with me then?” you asked hopefully.

Your father looked from you to Poppy, and then back to you, “Just for tonight you two,” he said.

“Thank you,” you said, throwing your arms around him and hugging him.

“Just go to bed now it’s late,” he said, kissing the top of your head.

He got up from your bed and walked to the door. He stepped out of your room and then closed the door behind him.

Poppy poked her head out from under your pillow so you tucked her in before cuddling under the blankets yourself. You fell asleep shortly after.

Being a Healer was all Y/N had dreamt of ever since she was a young girl. The aspiration stuck with her through Hogwarts and soon enough, she was working at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Despite all her accomplishments and living her dream, she was not satisfied. She wanted more. She craved adventure; something, anything more than the tedious life she led. She wanted to travel the world, meet different creatures, experience all types of cultures, taste different kinds of foods, and witness every beauty the world had to offer.

That is why when she’d heard the rumour of her long-lost friend, Newt Scamander’s plan to travel the world to find, study, and write a book on the various magical creatures, she had seized the opportunity and sent him a letter right away. A few days later when they met up at Diagon Alley to reconnect after several years and catch up, she brought up the idea of Newt allowing her to accompany him on his plan. Newt had agreed without the slightest of hesitation; her brilliant healing skills and a considerable amount of love for creatures would be a great asset to his conquest.

And so, the two set off.

Y/N travelled around the world; she saw its wonders, ate delicious treats, and fell in love with Newt. It did not come to her as a surprise, she had harboured feelings for him in their teenage years. An outcast and an insider who felt like an outcast, wasn’t it inevitable? Well, that’s what Y/N had thought until a certain snake came along. She saw the sparkle in Newt’s eyes, the love in his smile and the blush on his cheeks: all for the one Leta Lestrange. Newt and Y/N’s friendship dwindled as Newt and Leta’s friendship strengthened. Newt had changed, participating in dangerous activities, flaking out on plans, neglecting their friendship and her. Thus, she had decided to end their friendship. She did not voice her decision out loud, but it was apparent through her actions; the lack of effort to make any plans, no attempt to talk to him and went to absurd lengths to avoid his presence. And the sad thing was, she thought, he had never noticed.

Even now, she did not keep out any hope of her feelings being reciprocated for she had noticed the photograph Newt kept of Leta in his work shed. He was still, and probably would always be, in love with her much to Y/N’s dismay. But she persisted through every day, his friendship holding too much value in her life for her to let it slip out of her fingers again. And so, she continued to love him silently, admire him subtly as her heart broke quietly.

⭑*•̩̩͙⊱••••✩••••̩̩͙⊰•*⭑

A year and a half later their journey had taken them to the far east side of the world in India. Newt had heard talks of a rare creature existing in a desert on the northern side of the country. The heat was scorching, no amount of water quenching their thirst as they moved through the dunes. The only relief they received during their journey was when they’d retire back into Newt’s case and head towards the snowy region.

On that particular day, Y/N could be found in the work shed producing new remedies for the creatures in the case, as well as Newt who managed to obtain a new injury almost every day. The small table on her left was empty as it had been for the past six months, the imprint of a certain missing photograph barely visible.

Y/N walked into the shed one morning to find the space on the table empty, dust sitting everywhere on the table except for a small rectangular portion. She saw Newt’s eyes glance at her from the corner of her eyes as she looked at the vacant table. Without offering any comment, she went about her duties leaving Newt curious. Though, the hint of a curve of her lips Newt noticed had brought a smile to his face as he too went back to his work. Y/N continued her work even as Newt entered, dropping the bucket empty of food he was carrying onto the floor loudly.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, pouring the liquid from the mortar into a tiny vial.

She stored the vial carefully before turning around to see Newt half-naked. Her eyes widened and her cheeks reddened. She quickly turned away as she squeaked out, “Um Newt?”

Newt didn’t seem to realize she was present until then. He began to scramble for his shirt, spewing out apologies.

“I- uh. I’m decent,” he cleared his throat, his eyes cast down to the floor.

She turned around, wringing her hands behind her, staring down as she couldn’t seem to meet his eyes. “Are you all right?”

Newt winced remembering why he had been shirtless in the first place. “Yes. The Graphorn got a bit… excited today,” he told her.

She looked up immediately and stepped towards him, “Are you okay? Do you need anything?”

Newt smiled softly at the worry dripping through her words and shook his head, his hair flying around. “No, it’s quite alright. I’ll apply some ointment and I’ll be good to go.”

She nodded. “Okay. If you need me,” she said walking towards the door clumsily, her mind constantly bringing up the image of a shirtless Newt, “I’ll be with Dougal.”

Newt let out a deep sigh once she was a safe distance away and shook his head before walking over to the storage cupboard to look for the medicine.

⭑*•̩̩͙⊱••••✩••••̩̩͙⊰•*⭑

Y/N was telling Dougal about what had just transpired when she heard a hesitant shout, “Y/N? Could you please- I need your help!”

Dougal shot her, what she supposed was an encouraging look before shoving her away. She glared at the Demiguise before heading towards Newt’s voice. She took a shaky breath before entering the shed, her eyes downcast. “You called?”

“Yes um-” Newt stuttered, his face set on fire, “well, I can’t seem to reach the cut on my back so if you could…”

“Yes. Of course.”

She walked towards the chair on which he was perched upon, his bareback facing her. With trembling hands, she took the paste out of Newt’s hands and dipped her fingers in. She lifted her eyes onto the scar-covered back and she raised her hand slowly to apply the ointment on the large gash running down his back. Newt held his breath and clenched his eyes shut, his body flooding with warmth as Y/N took care of the wound carefully and delicately, making sure not to cause him any more pain.

Once she was done, Y/N placed the ointment container on the table on her right. Her hands drifted to trace the scars on Newt’s back, intrigued. Newt’s back muscles tensed as her fingers met his back, skin touching skin, and she pulled away quickly, “I’m sorry. I just-”

Newt got up and faced her to reassure her as his hands reached for the shirt hanging at the back of the chair, “It-it’s okay, Y/N.”

But she did not hear him, apologies continuing to tumble out her mouth as she moved towards the shed’s entrance. The sound of a bucket clattering to the floor sounded through the case as she bumped into it in her flustered state. Her face burned with embarrassment as she left hastily.

The task of putting his shirt back on was forgotten, remaining unbuttoned as Newt stared after her longingly.

⭑*•̩̩͙⊱••••✩••••̩̩͙⊰•*⭑

“Close your eyes and hold out your hands!”

“I played this game with my brother once and got slimed by a toad,” said Y/N.

Newt rolled his eyes, “It’s not a toad.”

She stared at him skeptically, “That’s what you said last time.”

“It happened once!” Newt exclaimed, causing her to let out a laugh.

He sighed, his head tilting to the right, “Just please close your eyes. I promise you it is not a toad or anything slimy.”

She looked at him for a moment before closing her eyes in defeat and extending her hands out. She stood there for a moment before she felt something tiny and furry get placed on her hands.

“Okay. Open your eyes,” Newt instructed quietly, nervous about her reaction. She slowly peeked her eyes open, eyes enlarging at the sight of the creature in her hands.

“A niffler!” she exclaimed, quickly bringing the deep blue creature near her, stroking its head, “Hello baby. Aren’t you just the most adorable thing?”

Newt watched her interact with the niffler with a smile on his face.

“It’s yours,” he said softly after a bit.

He knew she’d always wanted a niffler, especially after she’d gotten to know the one he had. He had always said the niffler was his and hers as well, but she never listened, claiming she would never be able to build a bond such as the one he had with the niffler. She looked at him in disbelief, an overjoyed smile on her face which made Newt’s heartbeat faster and his palms sweat.

“Really?”

Newt nodded shyly, his red-brown hair covering his mesmerizing blue eyes flopping with the movement.

“Oh, thank you so much!” said Y/N before going back to cooing back over the new addition to the family, hiding her crimson cheeks with a curtain formed by her hair.

She played with the niffler; petting his head and rubbing his stomach, keeping its hands a distance away from the earrings that it eyed greedily.

“Are you a niffler? Because you stole my heart.”

Y/N’s head snapped up to see Newt visibly flush and cringe at the cheesy line he just blurted out. He could not believe he just said that out loud. His head looked down further than usual, his hair covering his eyes completely as he hunched his shoulders, trying to hide his entire face away. He had surely ruined their friendship now; it was obvious from her prolonged silence she didn’t feel the same way.

“It’s a heart I would’ve wanted to steal even if I wasn’t a niffler.”

She winced at her words. Newt blinked and lifted his head slightly to look at Y/N’s flustered face.

‘What is that even supposed to mean? That makes no bloody sense,’ she scolded herself mentally. No one would understand Y/N’s weird thoughts or talks but Newt understood, he always understood.

“Really?” he whispered, taking a step towards her.

She nodded timidly, seeking solace in holding the niffler in her hands close to her chest as she considered if it was possible for the ground underneath to open and swallow her whole to save her from the embarrassment.

Against all instructions that her brain was shouting at her, she raised her head to catch a glimpse of Newt’s expression. She inhaled sharply when she found him much closer than she’d anticipated. His captivating blue eyes were a few inches away from her eyes, shining with an emotion she had only seen when he interacted with all his creatures. Y/N resisted the urge to lean forward and press her lips against every freckle littering his cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin that she could see due to the proximity.

Y/N felt like she was floating as Newt asked bashfully, his face practically on fire from nerves.

“May- may I kiss you?”

He cupped the side of her face gently once she nodded, looking between her eyes. He leaned forward pausing as his nose brushed against hers. He searched her eyes once again for any sign of hesitation but leaned forward when he saw none. Their lips brushed against each other softly, their eyes shutting in pleasure from the minimal contact. Newt halted for a moment before gently pressing his lips against hers. The kiss was clumsy and awkward, both still shy and learning. But it was them and therefore it was perfect.

The couple separated from the kiss as they felt something furry graze their chins. They laughed as they stared down at the furry little creature still in her hands looking up at them, its head tilted to the side. Newt reached out to rub the top of its head affectionately, watching it nuzzle into his touch. He admired Y/N as she giggled fondly at the niffler’s behaviour. She peered up through her eyelashes, her giggles slowly quietening as she looked into the blue eyes of the man she had loved since she was a young girl.

“I love you,” Newt confessed with a confidence and directness he’d never had before.

He had never felt so sure in his life, never felt so comfortable in speaking openly about whatever popped into his head until he reconnected with Y/N. He’d always had a shy and awkward demeanour but right now, at this moment, in her presence, it seemed to vanish into thin air. She smiled sweetly at the confession, pure and simple, just like the man before her.

“I love you too.”
