In 1888 the worst winter storm in the city’s history hit New York City, dumping 22 inches of snow on the Five Boroughs. Over 400 people died and many buildings burnt down from fires. Most notably, the East River froze and New Yorkers were able to walk across the frozen river between Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Brooklyn Army Terminal, 1949.

Andreas Feininger.

Designed by Woolworth Building architect Cass Gilbert and opened in 1919, the 95-acre Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park was one of the largest concrete structures in the world. The complex opened at the conclusion of World War I and used for various purposes over the years including a military prison and storage space for alcohol and drugs during Prohibition. During World War II it was the largest military supply base in the country. Today the site is on the National Register of Historic Places and houses a diverse group of local industrial businesses managed by the NYC Economic Development Corporation.

New renderings have been released for the new supertall office tower that will replace Hotel Pennsylvania. The Foster + Partner’s-designed tower, named PENN15 (not a joke), would top out at 1,270 feet, taller than the Empire State Building.

The skyscraper looks a lot like the residential Jenga block tower Downtown – 56 Leonard, with dozens of unique landscape terraces protruding from the facade.

Hotel Pennsylvania was originally developed by the Pennsylvania Railroad after the opening of Penn Station, one of the only real estate ventures for Penn RR, unlike the New York Central RR who developed or sold most of the real estate around Grand Central. Penn RR originally had their architects McKim, Mead & White design a hotel tower above Penn Station, but eventually decided not to add it for multiple reasons. After Penn Station opened, architect William Symmes Richardson of McKim, Mead & White designed the hotel, which opened across the street in 1919. Despite multiple demolition attempts over the last three decades and the establishment of the Hotel Pennsylvania Preservation Society, the building was never landmarked.

DID YOU KNOW Herald Square and Times Square are named after the Herald and Times newspapers that located their headquarters there at the turn of the century. The New York Herald newspaper was the first to move in the 1890s, previously the newspapers such as the World, Times, Tribune and Herald occupied a block of today’s Park Row across from City Hall known as Newspaper Row. When the Herald moved to 34th Street, they chose architect Stanford White to design their new headquarters at the intersection of Broadway and Sixth Avenue. The New York Times followed, moving north to the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue to an area known as Longacre Square. When the New York Times Tower opened in 1904 the city renamed the area Times Square.

Today’s #UrbanExploration post concerns the building known as the Piano Factory aka the Sohmer

Today’s #UrbanExploration post concerns the building known as the Piano Factory aka the Sohmer & Co. Piano factory building on Vernon Boulevard and 31st Avenue in Astoria, New York.

Built in 1866, the building was built in the Romanesque Revival style with a two sided clock tower corner and a copper trimmed mansard roof.

The building was the home of the Sohmer & Co. Piano factory for over a decade. In 1982 the company moved its operations to Ivoryton, Connecticut. For the next couple of decades, the building’s ownership changed hands multiple times. In 2007 the building earned landmark status number 2172 courtesy of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The building is now a residential building.

Grand Central Depot opened in 1871. Cornelius Vanderbilt, America’s first great tycoon, once said about the Grand Central Terminal look and feel: “People who come to New York should enter a palace on the end of their ride, and not a shed.”

On the second photo you can see one of the sculptures by an artist Jim Rennert. It’s part of a 3-figure series portraying ordinary people on a work day.

This one is called - Listen, which “invites viewers to pause and reflect amidst the ever-changing and fast-paced world around them.”

If there is one thing that this very odd and difficult year has taught us, it is that taking time to pause and reflect about our lives and routines is of utmost importance. Rennert’s works will remind New Yorkers that rushing into and out of Grand Central Station of just that.

CURIOUSER & CURIOUSER | EPISODE 08: PRIVATE PASSAGE.

Created by artist Malcolm Cochran, Private Passage (2005), found in Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove, is a distinctive sculpture consisting of a 30’ x 8’6” wine bottle resting on its side, within which is a representation of an interior stateroom from the ocean liner, Queen Mary.

The exterior of the bottle is fabricated of bronze and zinc with a traditional green patina. The interior of the bottle is fashioned from sheet metal and other materials in a monochromatic scheme evoking the look of a platinum print from a black and white film, similar to an image one might view in a magazine ad of the 1930s.

Visitors are able to view the interior through a number of portholes along the sides of the bottle. Larger circular windows in the mouth and bottom permit views down the length of the interior. A row of portholes along the top functions as skylights during the day. At night, and in overcast weather, the interior is illuminated by electric lights that are part of the cabin’s furnishings.
