Grand Central Depot opened in 1871. Cornelius Vanderbilt, America’s first great tycoon, once said about the Grand Central Terminal look and feel: “People who come to New York should enter a palace on the end of their ride, and not a shed.”

On the second photo you can see one of the sculptures by an artist Jim Rennert. It’s part of a 3-figure series portraying ordinary people on a work day.

This one is called - Listen, which “invites viewers to pause and reflect amidst the ever-changing and fast-paced world around them.”

If there is one thing that this very odd and difficult year has taught us, it is that taking time to pause and reflect about our lives and routines is of utmost importance. Rennert’s works will remind New Yorkers that rushing into and out of Grand Central Station of just that.

WE ARE NOT GOVERNMENT ISSUED mural was painted by 13 young Brooklyn women. The mural, located at the corner of 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue, is painted on the side of a building that was restored by the Fifth Avenue Committed and contains six affordable housing units. The mural can be seen from the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and makes a powerful statement against the war and the targeting of low-income minorities, especially young women, by military recruiters.

The project was envisioned during a four-month pilot of the leadership program Voices Her’d Visionaries, and is part of the Groundswell Community Mural Project.

The young women choose “women in the military,” with a focus on health issues that specifically affect women in the military.

In the mural, three young women are featured, armed not with weapons, but with the tools of creativity and education. The top figure in the painting holds a paintbrush from which a banner flows, reading, “We Are Not Government Issued.” Another section of banner reads, “Arm Yourself with the Knowledge to Think for Yourself.”

Parachutes fill the sky. The largest reads “Keep Your Illegal War Off…” along with many smaller parachutes with the words “Our Schools,” “Our Families,” “Our Neighborhoods,” “Our Futures,” “Our Bodies,” “Our Humanity,” “Our Morality,” “Our Taxes” and “Our Dreams” that drift through the mural.

CURIOUSER & CURIOUSER | EPISODE 08: PRIVATE PASSAGE.

Created by artist Malcolm Cochran, Private Passage (2005), found in Hudson River Park’s Clinton Cove, is a distinctive sculpture consisting of a 30’ x 8’6” wine bottle resting on its side, within which is a representation of an interior stateroom from the ocean liner, Queen Mary.

The exterior of the bottle is fabricated of bronze and zinc with a traditional green patina. The interior of the bottle is fashioned from sheet metal and other materials in a monochromatic scheme evoking the look of a platinum print from a black and white film, similar to an image one might view in a magazine ad of the 1930s.

Visitors are able to view the interior through a number of portholes along the sides of the bottle. Larger circular windows in the mouth and bottom permit views down the length of the interior. A row of portholes along the top functions as skylights during the day. At night, and in overcast weather, the interior is illuminated by electric lights that are part of the cabin’s furnishings.

You’d think you’d know by now what this iconic Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises is, it’s been there forever. I used to live on 42nd Str and 12th Ave & it was my regular sighting. But never looked into its history. It’s been here for 115 years. It’s seen Hell’s Kitchen the way we never would, the earlier Hell’s Kitchen, before it became hip & happening
Circumnavigation of Manhattan became possible in 1905 with the construction of the Harlem Ship Canal, the first regularly scheduled trip being the Tourist captained by John Roberts in 1908.

On June 15, 1945, Frank Barry, Joe Moran and other partners merged several companies to form Circle-Line Sightseeing Yachts, offering boat tours of New York operating out of Battery Park.

Since 1953 Circle Line has transported 70 million people to Liberty Island.

Circle Line Sightseeing continues to operate on the Hudson River and is dedicated exclusively to sightseeing.

The launch of the Houston Bowery Wall program in New York City was a fruitful renaissance for one of the highest regarded mural walls in the United States. Keith Haring made the wall famous by painting an original mural as a gift to the community in the late 1970s.
