Marlene Dietrich and her husband, Rudolf Sieber, arriving in Cherbourg (May 19, 1933)

I’ve seen this photo circulating throughout the years captioned with a story of Marlene being detained by the police for wearing pants. This story is entirely untrue. In this photo, Marlene has just stepped off of the train in Cherbourg where her husband was waiting for her. She ignored the hoards of reporters and photographers waiting for her, got in her car quietly, and left. The press did make remarks about her masculine fashion, but many also praised her. There were a few rumors that the French police considered a warrant for impersonating a man and sent warnings about her outfit, but she was never arrested.
