From the In Seeming Strong, by Cindy Butor.

Why were you interested in doing a comic for this book?

I really wanted to tell a different kind of superhero story with a different kind of superhero.  I think we forget that people with anxiety and mental illnesses can do all kinds of things, even save others.  It just affects them differently than neurotypicals.

How did you get into comics?

I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid, but it wasn’t until I discovered anime in high school that I really started illustrating and making comics.  Since then, I’ve found that comics are often the best medium for the stories I want to create, so I’ve been making them more and more.

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

Lucy Knisley’s autobiographical comics, especially Relish and Age of License, really helped me feel like the world needed to hear individuals’ stories, even if they weren’t especially grandiose.

Are you a fan of superhero comics?  If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

Superhero comics can be hit or miss with me, but when I find a series I like, I REALLY like it.  I love G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel, Reeder and Montclare’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye.

Who is your Silhouette?

My Silhouette is a woman named Frida who believes she should use her innate strength and privileges to help others.  She has anxiety, and it can make it difficult for her to celebrate her accomplishments, but she’s working on balancing her mental health needs with her philanthropic ones.

How do you describe your work?

I always try to balance straightforward storytelling with nuanced motivations and expressions.  Sometimes, it makes things muddied, but I’m always learning and growing.

Any other fun facts, stories or info you’d like to share?

I hope that people continue telling the stories we don’t see very often, stories about mental illness, race, health, gender equality, sexual orientation – everything!  The world is full of different people, and life is more interesting when we get to experience that full gamut.

From the Boy Problems. Written by Adam V Massimiano Illustrated by Cori Walters.

Why were you interested in doing a comic for this book?

I’m a longtime superhero fan who’s been really disappointed in superhero comics lately and I wanted to help contribute to more diverse stories being told! Also a bunch of alternate character interpretations is just fun ha ha.

How did you get into comics?

When I was in 6th grade my friend accidentally got two copies of an issue of Shonen Jump and I instantly fell in love with the entire medium and pretty much decided to do that for the rest of my life on the spot.

What are some of the comics that inspire you?

Oh boy that’s a tough question. Rice Boy, IDW’s Jem and the Holograms books, On A Sunbeam, What is Left, and Full Metal Alchemist feel like the biggest ones at this moment.

Are you a fan of superhero comics?  If so, what are a few of your favorites and why?

Yes! I’ve kind of fallen off them in the last few years because it’s hard for me to keep up with reboots but I love like teen superhero books. Blue Beetle v3, Stephanie Brown as Batgirl, 90s Superboy comics, Young Justice, and Young Avengers from the marvel side. Oh and I have a weakness for batbooks. Can you tell I’m more of a DC fan ha ha

Who is your Silhouette?

Our Silhouette

How do you describe your work?

I’ve been thinking of it as indie comix meets shoujo manga but who knows if that’s even accurate.

Any other fun facts, stories or info you’d like to share?
