Here is my recreation of Girl with a Pearl Earring. This was an assignment I did for my photography course and I have to say I’m pretty proud of it. The fact that there is minimal editing too makes me even more proud. (The task was that we had to edit - just for those who don’t like the extra details). I used my Belle from Beauty and the Beast doll and I think she did a great job. I had also taken photos using a Draculaura but that didn’t work as well as this Cleo. I’m liking that I feel like I’m finally learning something that I can see.

Creating content is difficult. To reroot one doll, takes me 4-6 hours. I can’t seem to keep up with the 30 second reels and videos. How do others do it, it’s driving me insane. My work takes house yet I shrink it to 30 seconds. How am I supposed to show you guys good stuff when I can’t work that fast?! Never mind knowing how to actually edit videos. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and under so much pressure. So here is to half a reroot and three more to go

These are the photos that I took from the set up. Even though they are similar photos the lighting is different as I used a reflector. I took about 150 photos, going through them was difficult because the lighting changes everything. It can soften the photo, brighten it or add a bit of mood to it. For the last image I decided to add some drops of water too. Next I will be photoshopping the image to fix it a little more.

I have been taking a photography course for a while now. I was happy with my photography for a while, but I knew I wasn’t using my camera properly. I have established a specific design aspect when it comes to showing my dolls. But I always felt like something was lacking. That’s why I decided to do a course. Up until now I have avoided taking photos of my dolls. I was so stuck in my way, but this most recent assignment I decided to get out of my comfort zone and take photos of my dolls. It was a struggle for me. I didn’t know what I wanted to see or how I wanted to take it. But this was my set up. I used the studio at school with some of their equipment.

Hel - I was really inspired to create this doll. There was something about her that was just calling me. I don’t find her evil because she rules the underworld, I find her powerful. I did something a little different with these photos. I’ve been studying a photography course fo about six months now. For the first time I used a doll as my subject during my course. It was a challenge for me because I have established a brand with my photos. It was difficult to break, but I finally have. Since both these dolls have a little darkness to them I wanted to be able to add that drama to the photos I think I’ve managed to achieve that. It’s always important to keep trying and working on improving your skills. You never know what you can do unless you try!

Periwinkle - can’t have Tink without her sister! I think I learned with this one that I didn’t need to reroot with so much yarn. This was before I realized I could untwist the yarn and reroot thinner pieces. I learned a lot by trial and error. It’s so much easier untwisting the pieces, rerooting and then brushing. Brushing the yarn while it’s still twisted after a reroot takes a lot of effort. Since her hair was short I didn’t mind the amount of volume, but less would have worked just as well.

Terrence - my first boy doll to repaint. This was a major challenge for me. I have hand tremors, so working on fine lines is a huge challenge for me. Making a line steady makes my anxiety hit the roof. That’s why when I work on female dolls I love doing smokey eye shadow. It helps with any lines that don’t look as straight as what they should. Smokey eye on Terrence wasn’t what I was going for. I tried to limit the amount of shading and for a first attempt I will admit I was happy with him. I enjoyed working on him so much I gave him his walnut bag and tried my best to create his acorn hat.

Rosetta - this doll right here is the reason I fell in love with using yarn for hair. Not only is it light and doesn’t weigh the head down, but the styling is easy and perfect! Volume is easy to create, curls stay in position. It’s just a dream to work with. I think it looks realistic too. Using brushed out yarn will always be my go to for hair.

Iridessa - I absolutely love this little sunflower, I loved working with yellow on a Clawdeen base, not to mention it was perfect for Iridessa. I also found the best yarn for her. It has twists of silver throughout and I feel like it just highlighted her braids perfectly. I honestly don’t think I could have created a better version of Iridessa. I absolutely love this doll.

Lagoona 2 - I have always regretted not keeping the first doll I created. I wish I had for sentimental reasons. So when I finished the first version of Lagoona, I decided I wanted to keep her in my collection. I had an absolutely lovely person who wanted to adopt the whole Monster High inspired series. I asked if I could create a second Lagoona for them and they were happy with me doing that, and here she is. I’ll admit I also love how she turned out. I think it has something to do with the colours.

Draculaura - this lady was pretty fun to create. For the most part she is my usually colours I like to use when it comes to make up. I don’t think she is as out there as my Lagoona, but I do like how she turned out in my style. If was fun creating them especially for the fact that I could still identify the characters. Clawdeen - I had a lot of fun creating these characters in my style. I really love doing to research and challenging myself to the different kinds of make up. I’m really loving trying out all different kinds of eye shadows. I do wish I could improve on eye shape, but if I want them to look symmetrical I need to go with the shape I’ve drawn. Once I start erasing and trying again and again it just gets messy, then tears are involved and it turns into a whole thing!

Lagoona - I decided to try recreate the original Monster High characters in my style. I started with Lagoona because I really loved the colours. Something that I really enjoy is seeing characters in all different artist styles. I find it fascinating, especially when it came to monster high. When it came to painting and drawing, I had always struggled to find a style. When I put together my final pieces there is smithing that ties them together I. Regards to style or technique where I could identify them as mine. When I started working on dolls, it took me creating about five dolls to find a style. Now, I think my dolls can be recognized as mine (the photography style helps too). That is something i am really proud of. I still paint and draw and I still haven’t found a style with either, but I’m working on it.

Monroe - for the first time a doll turned out exactly as I had planned. From the moment I rerooted Frankie, I was in love with this doll. I love the colours of red and green on her. It’s just perfection. I truly love how she turned out and I’ll admit, it was very difficult to sell her. I honestly didn’t want her to go. There is a beautiful botanical gardens near where I live, I visit it often and Monroe was inspired by the koi pond that is there. I even took photos of her there and the scenery was perfect for her. I’d love to do this colour combination again.

Endora - once again, noticing a theme with all white. . It’s not something I actually think about, it just happens to turn out that way. I’ve noticed it as I’ve been looking back over all my old photos. Endora - once again, noticing a theme with all white. . It’s not something I actually think about, it just happens to turn out that way. I’ve noticed it as I’ve been looking back over all my old photos. I know the details can be a little challenging to see with a white background, but there is something about it that I really like and is aesthetically pleasing.

Nerissa - while learning how to do embroidery I wanted her corset to look like little bubbles with a gradient from dark to light. My favourite colour is blue and all it’s shades. I enjoyed creating this one for that reason. I was initially only going to do four dolls for this series, but I couldn’t leave this one out.

Eira - for my first solo show I made a series of dolls that I felt were whimsical. I am absolutely inspired by anything related to water. I love flowing dresses (still learning how to sew them). I try to push myself with each new doll I create. I taught myself to embroider the dresses. I really did push myself with these ones. Eira is a water nymph of ice and snow.

Estelle - this was a commission I did for a customer. They had ordered four dolls from me and I was so anxious about creating four dolls for one person. I think this is where my love for white and monochrome started. Although I know the base doll is blue, but the fact that I only used minimal colours is something I find challenging but very effective. This makes me want do create a pair of dolls in black and white.

Snow White and Rose Red - I love how these girls turned out. Just like I had hoped. I used an Elissabat and a Draculaura doll. I found it difficult to tell the difference between the two dolls, but once I did the repaint I could see a big difference. I’m really proud at how delicate they look.

Snow White - now that I’m able to do so much research with my dolls, I do work a lot slower. It gives me the time to really consider what I’m doing when it comes to shading makeup or even making the clothes and styling hair. I can honestly say I take pride in what I’m doing. These outfits were one of the most elaborate outfits I have ever made. So many layers and tiny details. I had always struggled with sewing, but some how, one day something clicked and I made these! Although, I had created a few versions because I couldn’t choose which combination or material I liked best. That seems to be something I do now, create more than one outfit to make sure I can make it properly.

Rose Red - taking another challenge for @thedollartistscollective was creating another pair of dolls. This time for the Grimm fairytale theme. I’d never heard of the story of Snow White and Rose Red. So I bought a book and did a little research on the internet. A lot of my process when making a doll is research. I used to just create a doll when I first started, but now I do a lot of research. Reading, image research, makeup and outfit research. I create mood boards and only once I have a kind of idea where I’m going do I start working on the doll. I really feel like this has improved the quality of my finished doll.

My two girls Soleil and Titania - attending the masquerade ball as the goddess of night and moon and the goddess of day and sun. I’m super proud of these two. Usually I plan out my dolls and things don’t turn out the way I had hoped, but with these two, they exceeded my skill level, my planning and my expectations. Even the photography kinda blows my mind.
