#palmoil
A few days ago my daughter decided to cut Palm oil out of her diet, out of her life. This is where the story starts, except, it began before.
In March, we, my daughter and I went to listen to Neil Gaiman give the Douglas Adam’s memorial lecture. One thing he said was about how easy it is to forget conservation. We talked together a lot over the next few days about the rhinos and the work of the EIA and my daughter started to shift her plans of the future. Drawn by another writer, we watched Terry Pratchett’s documentary about orangoutangs and I could get the image of the orangoutang clinging to the last bit of rainforest, shrinking as the Palm tree crop crept closer. I started to think about Palm oil. We changed shampoo and soap and my daughter started reading ingredients, putting down biscuits and chocolate because Palm oil was a listed ingredient. Then she said she was going to give it up, because there is no point talking about conservation and not doing anything.
We have begun.
I am a lactose intolerant vegetarian. My one concession has been that I need dairy free margarine.
We have changed our brand of peanut butter.
I have found granola bar recipes as all cereal bars contain Palm oil.
We can only seem to eat organic dark chocolate. (This is not a punishment.)
Bread, crackers are all being scrutinised and I realise baking is going to have to be a big feature of this experience.
Any ideas are welcome. I’m going to record what happens, post recipes and other ideas as we go.
If everyone stopped using Palm oil, demand would disappear. This may not save the rain forests forever; it might slow their destruction down. It might mean orangoutangs live in the wild, for now.
