“Between the Door and the Street” (2013) by Suzanne Lacey

Something I noticed that was pleasing to the eye is that while people who’ve come to observe are on the inside of the yellow tape because they want to listen, they do not overstep their boundaries and allow the women to share their perspectives and experiences. In addition—and I’m unsure of Lacey’s intention—I feel that the scarves work as a microphone to emphasizing who was meant to speak while also serving as a silencer, being that scarves can suffocate if worn too tight.

SILINDOKULHE PRE-SCHOOL / Saga Collective

For its first experiment, the collective Saga involved itself in a community development project in Joe Slovo, an informal settlement in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The project consists in two building facing each other: on one side, the sanitation building with eight toilets and two sinks and on the other side, the main hall. A container is plugged to the main building and hosts a kitchen and a storage room. The building has been conceived to host the children while the architects build the actual preschool on the opposite plot. It will then become a workshop dedicated to wood and metal work. The idea is to offer a space for the many local small entrepreneurs to launch their business. They will then be able to share their tools and knowledge but also have a proper space to work other than their homes. That being said, the building was designed as a hall that could host various usages throughout time. For now, partition walls can be pulled down in order to separate the three classes of the preschool.

AKôO Espacio autogestionado CCEMalabo / Zuloark + Inteligencias Colectivas

For two weeks Zuloark + Inteligencias Colectivas were working with many people at the Cultural Center of Spain in Malabo, to think what they could build there that the users needed, search the materials and proffesionals and build it at the site. Most people felt the need to have somewhere in the center that could be used as they wished. So they decided to build this space for self-management. The Akôo prototype recovers and evolves construction techniques from Bioko Island. Car tires that serve as foundations are widely used for a lot of similar applications. The wood and its shape is from the island too. The color of the structure is used in many homes in the city and is the result of mixing a pigment in white paint. The plastic cover is twisted tube, reinterpreting covers of braided nipa (a kind of palm) that have been banned in Guinea. From the first moment Akôo has been used as a meeting, study, trial and shadow place.

From the collaboration of different cultural agents of Usera District as Kubik Fabrik, Espacio Oculto Madrid, Asociación Creática  and Asociación de Vecinos Barrio El Zofio, along with Intermediae, the collective Todo por la Praxis, in collaboration with We_diseñamos, articulates a co-management process for developing a temporary infrastructure in a public space inside the project Paisaje Sur.
The result of these sessions was formalized in a device that enables the development of cultural programming in different formats: the “cultural capsule” as an exhibition and meeting space, a stage and screen and two tiers that are linked to the scenic space. The proposal as a whole, mainly because of its temporary nature, will suffer adaptations, modifications or alterations in order to be able to adapt to the needs of the community. Therefore, it is interpreted as a transformable, evolutionary, open and flexible to the appropriations of the users that manage it.

“Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field, go find out what they are doing. Do things without always knowing how they’ll turn out. You’re curious and smart and bored, and all you see is the choice between working hard and slacking off. There are so many adventures that you miss because you’re waiting to think of a plan. To find them, look for tiny interesting choices. And remember that you are always making up the future as you go.”

“There are no vacant lots in nature.”

This is a great Mantra for Permaculture Design. Permaculture design is about designing our participation in an existing community of life. It’s more like entering the dance floor gracefully, finding company and dancing along for everybody’s joy. It’s not anything like altering an existing painting or painting on an empty canvas. One must also remember, the dancer has to be the designer.
