Yesterday I had the joy of doing some Live Drawing documentation of Peterborough’s LGBTQ+ Task Force Community Forum.
The Task Force is a network of LGBTQ+ professionals in the community who want to “foster a spirit of inter-sectorial (e.g. health, education, business, law enforcement, volunteer and support services) collaboration and multidisciplinary participation in initiatives that advocate for, develop and promote a sustained culture of opportunity, equity and inclusivity for individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions (LGBTQ) in the City and County of Peterborough.”
The event itself called out to the LGBTQ community at large to talk about what they want and need in their lives. There were lots of notes taken, of course, but my job was to document some of the images and emotions as well as what was said.

ten years ago, i graduated from this MA program (then called Theory, Culture and Politics). i was broke, in debt, traumatized (but didn’t have access to such language to name this at the time), thoroughly disillusioned with north-american academia.
and here we are, exactly 10 years since i defended my thesis, as a grassroots self- and community-taught educator, artist, facilitator, writer, going back to my alumni as a guest speaker.

“Since graduating from the Theory, Culture and Politics MA program at Trent University in 2011, Kama La Mackerel has gone on to establish themselves as a leading multidisciplinary artist and writer in Canada. In this talk, they look over their body of artistic work of the past decade, which spans from performance, poetry, photography, the moving image to digital art and literary translation, to offer a theoretical framework in which they ground their aesthetics and politics.
At once a performance lecture and a studio visit, this talk will delve into the following questions: Is a decolonial enunciation possible at all in a racialized body that bears the weight of colonial history? What are the strategies of selfhood that a trans artist can deploy to catalyze new signs of identity and innovative sites of collaboration and contestation? How can hybrid spaces and interstices provide an anticolonial framework to disrupt fixed identifications as they relate to space, time, history, language, kinship and the body?”

i have followed & admired @tedd2s’ work for a long time & i had hoped that someday, our paths would somehow cross & my skin would become the canvas for his art & ink ✨
@tedd2s lives & works in #peterborough, which was the small white town where i landed when i first came to canada (but we didn’t know each other then) ♂️
so when i found out that Tedd was coming to #montreal it felt like an affirmation from the universe (particularly when a spot unexpectedly opened for me!)
i find Tedd’s shadow project such a beautiful meditation on plants & light, particularly weed ecologies (as we tend to pay little attention/know very little about weeds & the histories they carry)
for this project, Tedd made the offering of a sand dropseed, a weed native to these territories. i couldn’t be happier (at Montreal, Quebec)
