Phineas Welles being the best character in TOW for 7 minutes straight.
Why did obsidian feel the need to make me fall in love with countless characters in The Outer Worlds but not the ability to romance them?
Is this some sick joke? Some sort of punishment?
I wanted to draw the moment Phineas realized he’s in love with Mal ❤
Mal, on a whim, invites him to an opera she got a part in, fully expecting him not to attend. Phineas puts on a disguise and goes in secret. he disappears before she can see him.
(and did I maybe just want to draw Phineas with glasses and slicked back hair? yes)

these have spoilers for the game:
- Phineas likes to bring up being old a lot:
Mal was 36 when she boarded the Hope. There’s a dialogue in game where the Captain says they were frozen for 70 years, which would mean Mal is actually 106 years old - she likes to joke about this with him.
- there’s an entry on the Hope about Phineas inadvertently killing someone who liked to sing. I headcanon that this is Mal’s younger sister. Mal’s background is an opera singer and stage actress.
(cw: alcohol) Phineas knows Mal is the older sister. this is why he’s so aloof and distant to her. though one day Phineas had too much to drink, and mistakenly leaves the door to his lab open:
Mal finds him passed out on the floor. Phineas, in his stupor, calls her the younger sister’s name instead (Madeleine).
Mal thinks she’s still alive and can be taken out of hibernation. Phineas hides the truth from her. I headcanon that Mal only finds out near the end when the player finds out, once she reads the terminals on the Hope.
- this is also the point where they’ve gotten really close to each other. Mal gets the (false) impression that Phineas looks down on her for not being a “genius, engineer, or scientist”, and this is the reason why he always pushes her away.
they get into a huge argument about that, and this is where Phineas accidentally confesses to her, oops
- I picture Mal eventually forgiving Phineas for what happened to her sister. this is the scene I drew here ❤
