1· Escaping the Odds (Leicester New Walk Museum) The first Liopleurodon attacked the Muraenosaurus from below and behind. In this ambush the Liopleurodon, a pliosaur, tore away half of a forelimb. But the smell of blood in the water attracts a second nearby Liopleurodon, and the following confrontation will allow the Muraenosaurus, a plesiosaur, to escape!. PRINTS
2· Leviathan (Museum of Jurassic Marine Life) The greatest predators in the Jurassic oceans were pliosaurs, some of which grew over 12m in length. Here an enormous Pliosaurus lunges forward to capture and swallow a Cryptoclidus whole. Above this attack are four large fish, called Pachycormus, and below swim ammonites, Pectinates, and a shoal of belemnites, Belemnoteuthis.PRINTS
3· Dancing Pliosaurs At dusk, two pliosaurs dance while a third takes advantage of a pterosaur cleaning station. The pliosaurs and pterosaurs are no particular species; I just thought it was a nice idea that I hope to paint one day soon (in future I might try to make my sketches more species specific). And I realise the low sun may attract criticism because of the sunset cliché, but I figure every place on Earth (except the poles) has a sunrise and a sunset every 24 hours so they are very frequent events.
4· Jurassic Red Tide (Private commission) A paleoartwork with an abstract expressionist twist! Here a Liopeurodon ferox is swimming amongst a bloom of red algae near a coastal coral reef. This was rendered using photographs, digital painting, and an acrylic painted scale model of Liopleurodon.PRINTS
Pliosaur Fossil Found in Dorset, UK: Sea Monster Battles
To aid in capturing prey, some pliosaurs (such as the one attacking a smaller plesiosaur in this illustration) evolved features such as supersize eyes, fearsome teeth, and/or extremely long necks… As for the newly discovered Dorset specimen, further research, including CT scans, may show whether the 52 ft long (16 m) beast is a new species.
Hans Sues, a paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., noted that “the classification of late Jurassic pliosaurs is still a mess, and, in absence of a reliable, published, modern review of all European specimens, it is hard to sustain any claim of a new species.”

Megacephalosaurus was a Late Cretaceous pliosaur. It was discovered in the Carlile Shale Formation in Kansas. Megacephalosaurus actually represents one of the last members of the pliosauridae family.
A couple months ago, I submitted an entry to the Waterhouse Natural Sciences Art Prize, a pretty fancy art contest hosted by the South Australian Museum. This was the piece I submitted, a papercraft lightbox entitled “An Outback of Ice and Sea”, and it’s taken a good month of my life getting it all together!
And I am very excited to announce that I have been selected as a finalist! Any of y’all who are in South Australia, you’ll be able to come and see my work (and a whole bunch of others’) on display at the SA Museum from the 4th of June to the 7th of August!
This piece is a scientific recreation of the Bulldog Shale formation, an opal-rich fossil locality in the desert of my home state of South Australia. 110 million years ago, this place wasn’t a desert, but an icy inland sea near the South Pole that was brimming with life! Every animal species in this artwork is based on fossil evidence from the region, down to the crinoids and brittle stars and bivalves!
The star of the piece is Umoonasaurus demoscyllus, a small plesiosaur with crests on its head that was local to this area. The Umoonasaurusis pursuing Ptyktoptychion eyrensis, a giant relative of modern-day ratfish while belemnites and ammonites bod in and out of the seaweed. And overhead amongst the icebergs, the giant pliosaur Kronosaurus queenslandicuslooms.
I’m so proud of this piece as something that I’ve poured hours of love and research into, and I’m so thrilled to have been selected to be a part of this exhibition!
