PLEASING POISON FROG
(Ameerega bassleri)

Wilson, B. 2010.
Department of San Martin, Peru

Otherwise known as the Bassler’s poison frog, the pleasing poison frog is undoubtably an attractive amphibian. Highly toxic, but attractive. Just make sure to wear gloves if you want to look closer, otherwise I figure you won’t feel so pleased.

Phantasmal poison frog (Epipedobates tricolor) have extremely toxic skin. They secrete epibatidine, a toxic alkaloid.  The toxin binds to pain receptors, cause numbness and eventual paralysis resulting in death. Potentially, this toxin could be 200 times more potent than morphine. They derive their poison from their diet of insects.  Various chemicals from the insects collect in glands in the frogs’ skin.

Phantasmal poison dart frogs (Epipedobates anthonyi) are South American dendrobates that live on forest floors. Males will guard egg clutches laid in leaf litter, and when the tadpoles hatch he will transport them on his back to pools of water.
