LIVE

In honor of Gopher tortoise day (April 10th), here’s one of my favorite patients, Danny Devito the gopher tortoise! He was hit by a car and required long term care to repair the damage to his shell. This involves surgical correction of the shell fractures (hence the screws), along with supportive care and pain medication. This is him enjoying his daily outside time in the sun! After recovery in the hospital this animal was released into the wild near where he was found. Please always watch for tortoises and other reptiles when you’re out there on the road!

A very satisfying post-mouse yawn from Cornelius :)

I’ve been awake for too long and I googled pictures of toads and now I’m crying. I NEED someone else to appreciate narrow-mouthed toads PLEASE. they are so underhyped and it hurts my heart

In the first photo, going clockwise:

African Civet, Long-Eared Owl, Heliobacter Pylori, Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle, Bacteriophage, Manta Ray, Shaggy Mane Mushroom, Echeveria Succulent, Parson’s Chameleon, and a Dilophosaurus Skull.

It was really cool to see how @acornpress took my drawings and turned them into fun little charms. I wanted to come up with a set of pins that sort of coincided with my biological patches set, so I chose favorites from the ten disciplines and voila- cute, bright, little pins!

Happy #WorldSnakeDay! To mark the occasion, I have just released this new poster showing 13 of the 19 genera of pseudoxyrhophiid snakes from Madagascar! These snakes are really amazing, showcasing the evolutionary potential of the snake bauplan, and occupying niches from slug-eating to egg-eating, vince-snakes to racers, and everything in between.

I am thrilled to introduce Madagascar’s newest frog species, Rhombophryne ellae! This new diamond frog is presumed to be endemic to Montagne d’Ambre National Park in the far north of Madagascar. Its uniquely orange legs and large black hip markings set it apart from all other Rhombophryne species so far. I have the great pleasure of dedicating the new species to my partner, Dr Ella Z. Lattenkamp, in appreciation of her support of my work, and celebration of her recent PhD defence! You can read about the new species and get a link to the #OA paper published in Zoosystematics and Evolution on my blog at http://www.markscherz.com/archives/4598 (link in bio)

Brahminy blindsnake (Indotyphlopsbrahminensis)

One of the world’s smallest snakes, this parthenogenically-reproducing species is also called the flowerpot snake because it’s believed to have been spread around the world’s tropics by stowing away in plants.

Like other members of the blindsnake family, it has tiny eyes that are covered with skin and feeds mainly on ant larvae and termites, avoiding retaliation with its incredibly smooth scales that are almost impossible for an ant’s jaws to grasp.

Quagsiren [Water/Ground] A neotenic evolution of wooper, only found in certain regions. They are extremely rare in the wild and were only recently given an official Pokédex listing. They prey primarily on [Water/Grass] types and are known to target Lotads in particular

Forest Crested Lizard (Calotes emma, Agamidae)

This attractive lizard inhabits various forest habitats including dry deciduous, coastal, and moist evergreen. It can be spotted on tree trunks, often low down.

Its identifying features are the single spine above each eye, and twin spines above the typanum (external ear-drum). Patterning and colouration can include various shades of brown, green and grey. Males are generally darker during the breeding season. The fingers and toes are of great length.

The Forest Crested Lizard ranges from India through Burma, southern China and Thailand to northern Peninsular Malaysia.

Common House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus, Gekkonidae)

The Common House Gecko is a native of southeastern Asia. It is also known as the Pacific House Gecko, the Asian House Gecko, or simply, the House Lizard. Most geckos are nocturnal, hiding during the day and foraging for insects at night. They can be seen climbing walls of houses and other buildings in search of insects attracted to porch lights, hence their name “House Gecko”. Spread around the world by ships, these geckos are now common in the southern United States, large parts of tropical and sub-tropical Australia, and many other countries in South and Central America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

The gecko community at my house have a pretty good life with a smorgasbord of insect life at their disposal attracted to the MV night light when I am photographing night-flyers.

Golden Tree Frog, Common Tree Frog, Four-lined Tree Frog, or Striped Tree Frog (Polypedates leucomys

Golden Tree Frog, Common Tree Frog, Four-lined Tree Frog, or Striped Tree Frog (Polypedates leucomystax, Rhacophoridae)

Polypedates leucomystax is widely distributed throughout South and Southeast Asia, hence it’s variety of common names. It thrives in both wetlands and forests. In urban settings, P. leucomystax can be found in garden ponds, on buildings, and on roads.

Breeding is year-round in some parts of the range but in drier areas, breeding is restricted to the start of the wet season. Males congregate at still or slow-moving water, or puddles, and call from the edges or elevated positions on vegetation. The call has been described as a “widely spaced nasal quack, and occasionally a low throaty chuckle”. Females deposit from 100-400 eggs in oval-shaped foam nests. The foam nests measure about 10 cm in length and are constructed on vegetation above ephemeral pools, or attached to a surface by the water’s edge. Hatching takes place after three to four days, occurring at the external gill stage. At this point the larvae wriggle free of the foam nest and drop into the water below. The larvae are opportunistic predators, attacking and consuming nearly anything they can, including both live and dead conspecific tadpoles and decaying vegetation. From hatching to metamorphosis takes approximately seven weeks.

LOOKING FOR REPTILE OWNERS To provide photo references for models, will be credited for helping with the base model as well as paid, either in money or with a discount/free commission on the base you help with.

After the pain that was trying to sculpt the Corn Snake without proper refs I’m going to treat this more like a business deal. With the help of my S/O I got some example pictures of Brood, my ball python, to use as a guide for any snake references. I will also need geckos and lizards but unfortunately don’t have my own to take example photos.

https://imgur.com/a/pl7X51l

I am only looking for people who can provide clear, crisp and close up photos with good lighting and ideally with out much noise in the background. I wont be using your photos outside of referencing, I also wont be copying exactly, they will be guides, but I WILL credit you for your help with the base model. For anyone interested I would ask you to contact me with an example of the quality of photo you would provide and if it meets my needs we can discuss further terms of the deal i.e. payment/free commission etc.

If you have any questions please ask! Also here is a photo of my 3D modeled Corn Snake that I just finished, and this was without proper references (was a complete nightmare >.<) Any reblogs are super appreciated <3
