“tired of self-care. how about a little bit of government care. political care. infrastructural care.” /id]
Sometimes, people talk a certain way about science and social responsibility, and I want to remind them “Carbon emissions are terrible for the planet and wind/solar energy are much better, and there is no fundamental ideological reason for that. There is no way you could have deduced that from social theory, from Marx or Engels or listening to marginalized people or respecting the subjectivity of others or anything else. It is an absolute coincidence. If the facts of physics or biology or chemistry were a little bit different, it could have turned out that carbon emissions were fine and wind or solar were terrible. Please realize that you too, as a Smart Social Commentator, are subject to Gell-Mann amnesia. You could not have known. Have at least a little respect for the, ahem, way of knowing of the people to whom we will (if we make it out of this) owe our continued survival as a species.”
Just a little salty about this.
I’ve often wondered whether it’s good or bad that needed environmental policy has such a big but not total overlap with pastoralist aesthetics. On one hand, it means that so many of the people pushing for the policy are doing it for aesthetics, and for the ability to moralize at their cultural enemies, which is not ideal in terms of getting the correct solutions. It’s why we have so many people supposedly ‘on our side’ against nuclear energy and carbon capture. It’s why the Sierra Clubs of the world routinely block new hydro, wind and solar projects and even electrical grid connectivity projects. On the other hand, that same set of observations suggests pastoralist motivations are much stronger than world-saving ones, and if there was no overlap, perhaps very little would get done at all, and the people yelling about global warming would be totally marginal to the world’s politics.
The Trump administration ended DACA. It’s now in the hands of Congress, but Trump tweeted (yes, tweeted) that he will “revisit” issue if Congress doesn’t legalize DACA in six months. You can donate to help some Dreamers whose permits are expiring prior to March 5, 2018 here.
Hurricane Irma is now a Category 5 storm and is predicted to affect the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos) and Florida causing potentially catastrophic damage.
Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority, are fleeing Myanmar into Bangladesh with “stories of systematic rape, murder, and arson they escaped.” The Guardian has a good intro to the ongoing conflict here.
TheNorth Korea situation continues to escalate. Trump meanwhile is planning to end trade deal with South Koreaandcalling them out on Twitter because ????
The La Tuna fire is now 70% contained according to officials.
Eagle Creek Fire: “Officials believe the teen and others may have been using fireworks that started the forest fire. Police made contact with the teen in the parking lot of the Eagle Creek Trailhead, and he is cooperating with police.” Potential ways to help those affected here.
Over 100,000 people have been displaced in Nigeria due to flooding.
The U.S. Justice Department confirmed on Friday that neither they nor the FBI has any evidence that the Obama administration wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential campaign despite Trump’s tweet in March.
If every working-class person in the world decided this afternoon to install solar panels on their roofs and started biking instead of driving, the ice caps would still melt and the human race would still die off. It simply isn’t possible to end climate change while working within a system that sends all your products overseas in massive supertankers wrapped in unrecycled plastic that will be thrown in a landfill the moment it hits land - and practices like that aren’t going to go away because of your purchasing habits.
Nor are we gonna hit some magical point where using clean energy and reducing waste are suddenly the cheapest or most profitable option and so all the world’s big companies fall over each other to switch over. That has never been the case and never will be - the “free market” isn’t going to save us.
The fact of the matter is, this system needs to be torn down if our species is to survive. We don’t have time to delay the revolution anymore. Capitalism is extinction.
Eat the rich.
So I’m wasting time on Reddit, as one does and I came across this post in another subreddit
Utterly moronic, right? Like who tf is trying to teach 5 year olds about sex?
So anyway, because I’m an asshole in my 30s who no longer cares about life, I went to the original post and commented
So ~20min later I get this
Only took me 1 whole comment. Who are supposed to be the “snowflakes” again?
@willingsubsocal
Alright, I had to reblog this because the replies are too short and I wanted to break it down why this ain’t it, Fam
Tell me you didn’t read your sources w/o telling me you didn’t read your sources:
- 1st link: For starters, it’s an opinion piece. Secondly, if you read the actual material being complained about, it clearlysays kids grades k-5 would only be learning Anatomy and Physiology and Puberty and Adolescent Sexual Development. Which is already commonly taught at that age (that’s when I learned about it in school).
- 2nd link: Students (at a private school, mind you) were shown a cartoon designed for little children discussing proper names for body parts. I watched the cartoon (which was linked in the article). It’s fine. One of the kids mentions he sometimes touches his penis and his penis gets hard, and the adult character explains that there’s nothing wrong with that but that should be done in private and that private parts should always be ‘private’/covered. At no point is anyone taught how to masturbate or anything of the sort. Sex isn’t even mentioned. It’s all presented from a health standpoint.
- 3rd link: Kids K-2 would only learn personal safety and respecting others. No sex.
- 4th link: More of the same. K-2 would learn personal safety and body parts, appropriate touching, etc.
So, you’ll get that $20 when you show me an example of teachers trying to instruct 5 year olds about sex. Not about their health or development. Not about consent or appropriate touching, which all SHOULD BE TAUGHT AT THAT AGE. Show me this “promoting LGBT”, you were talking about.
Imagine being this fucking pathetic
Like seriously. Imagine it. It’s one Hell of a self esteem booster. Gotta love the dog whistle of “your kind”
“Local man disproves his own argument and thinks that’s a good look!! More at 9.”
Anyway, I’m now making my offer officially public.
Provide me with a verifiable source of children in the state of Florida are being taught about sex at 5 in school and I will Venmo you (CashApp, PayPal, Zelle, what the fuck ever) $40.
I’m being entirely serious. I’m open minded and not above admitting when I’m wrong. Buuuut thus far no one has proven me wrong on this. Wonder why?
Hint: Don’t use the same sources Fuck Face Von Magee used. I’m just gonna laugh at you.
Or you can always admit you hate gay people and keep it moving
New Bill Would Finally Let Tribes Access CDC Money For Public Health Emergencies
What? Guess who’s been doing a whole chunk of Oklahoma’s COVID-19 outreach? Have they been doing it on the state’s dime? I didn’t get the impression it was all self-funded, or even mostly.
