the present—
a chanceful encounter reignites a long-lost flame.
Poppy grumbles under her breath as she watches her parents discuss the floor plans of their new resort along the edges of a mountainous area, uninterested. As the workers continued with the foundation, and designers speak with one another, Poppy finds herself heaving a big sigh before getting on her feet and walked towards the entrance of a nature reserve not far from the site.
Unbeknownst to this young heiress, was a cave about a mile away into the reserve. Even having walked through this place the few days she had tagged along; it was her first time discovering it. As she steps closer, Poppy becomes aware of a tug in her chest; a magnetic pull, a presence caressing along the edges of her consciousness to step further into this cave.
What she then witnesses, is beyond her wildest imaginations.
A brown coloured dragon, bearing a beautiful resemblance to the rich soil she walked on; its claws were glistening dangerously under the small amount of sunlight which barley makes into the cave. Its arms bear geometric patterns in warm gold, its fluttering light following the breathing of its owner. Its golden mane, a dirty gold, Poppy would even compare it to that of surfer boys in the East.
That had not been the surprising factor; Poppy was not afraid.
And her answer, will be in the form of this dragon rising from its slumber.
“A young maiden in front of a monstrous beast,” the dragon speaks. “What would you, pray tell, do with the knowledge of my existence before your very eyes?”
A moment of silence, before Poppy speaks again.
“My parents barely have time for me, it had always been, ever since I was young. I only came here because its summer break,” Poppy sighs, fiddling with her fingers. “But…what are youdoing here?”
The dragon sighs. “I made this place, of course I would be here.”
“This cave?”
“I have lived for over six thousand years,” the dragon huffs. “My power does not only limit to creating caves.”
“I would assume that you would be living somewhere higher up than…this,” Poppy gestures to their surroundings before crossing her arms. “Aren’t you afraid of getting discovered and you ending up all over the frontlines?”
The dragon chuckles, and it visibly becomes fully awake. “I have my ways, human.”
Its form is then bathed in a warm glow, dim enough to not attract any outside attention. Behind the tendrils of smoke which formed in the afterglow, pulled away to reveal a tall, slender but well-muscled woman. For someone napping in a cave hidden in this nature reserve, she was decked out in finery, silk blouse under a crisp suit; tailored pants which accentuated her contours of her legs.
The piercing gold of her eyes still remain. Shimmering, with curiousity and amusement.
The woman picks off her fringe with a gloved finger, a crooked smile tugging at the edge of her lips. “Do you understand what I mean now?”
“You look like any other rich sleazebag I’ve ever seen growing up, but much younger of course,” Poppy says. “Anyways, don’t show off like that without letting me know your name. Or else I’m gonna have to call you by god knows what ugly nickname.”
A flash of melancholy, the golden eyes dimmed. Calmer, reducing to warm yellows and orange of a sunset. Did Poppy say something wrong?
“Ah, how rude of me,” the woman chuckles, brushing off the sudden change in atmosphere. “Pleased to be of your acquaintance, Miss Min-Sinclair. I go by the name of Bea.”
Poppy’s hazel eyes widen. “H-How do you- “
“I would know of every family who holds important power in this country,” Bea says. “I believe I’ve already told you how long I’ve lived.”
“You didn’t give any indication that you knew me when I walked into this cave.”
Bea shakes her head, smiling, as she steps out into the sunlight. “Now that we have introductions cleared, I believe it’s about time for me to speak with your parents on building a resort and causing disruption to my private property.”
“What?Private property?” Poppy nearly misses her step as she catches up to Bea.
The taller woman turns on her heel, the predatory gaze returning.
“I own this plot, Poppy darling,” a growl. Poppy takes note of the small rumble at the end of the sentence. “And I take pride in my creations.”
-
Bea’s company building was situated near the heart of Manhattan; a massive contrast between the hustling streets and the quiet wildlife back in the reserve.
Poppy was escorted by the CEO herself to her office, the third highest floor of the building. The two higher ones would be the private restaurant and the swimming pool on the rooftop. The heiress was quick to notice that the interior design of the room was that of a rustic antique shop; the owner, of an age like fine wine and knowledge vaster than the great skies above their heads. There was also a distinct earthy smell, like walking between bookshelves in a library.
“This…” Poppy trails off.
“I take pride in how I present myself,” Bea walks over to a set of glass displays, running her gloved finger across the surface. “I hope it’s to your liking.”
Poppy walks to Bea’s side, admiring the geode collection. “I thought only nerds, spiritual wannabes and old people collected these?”
Bea raises an unamused eyebrow.
“What? Am I wrong?”
The gentlewoman then touches the shining orange rock on her earring. “I made one of them into an earring, long ago,” she then pauses to look at the mortal beside her. “Are you sure you’re alright staying here? Am I not taking you away from your parents for long?”
“Why would they worry about their quote-on-quote ‘princess’ if they’re willing to leave me here to get on your good side?”
“…fair enough.”
Bea pours herself a glass of bourbon, before walking to the windows. “Make yourself comfortable, I need to collect my thoughts. It has been quite a field day.”
The dragon remembers. Two thousand years ago, when she had to bear the ultimate burden of witnessing and holding Poppy dying in her arms; crumbling into dust, onto the blood-soaked earth, slipping past her bloodstained and calloused fingers. The moment when Bea felt an invisible force tear through the bond, severing it, bearing herself to that indescribable pain.
She thought.
She wanted to reply:
Poppy darling.
I recognised you. How could I ever forget you?
I still remember that year underneath the tree blooming with flowers, in front of our people, as we founded a new city together.
But I couldn’t tell you what I needed to before you perished.
My heart became immovable. I always pretended I was alright, had forgotten that even the mightiest gods would eventually have to face erosioneventually.
Later on, I brought our people away from war-stricken lands and rebuilt a new city, but I was afraid of forgetting you.
It’s alright now.
Bea slowly turns to look at the current incarnation of her beloved, who was scrolling through her phone on the couch in front of her desk.
I have you with me, both in person and in spirit. I finally can find peace and learn to forgive myself after so long.

ᐊ Chapter Two: Present (if you squint)
ᐅPoppy glances over her shoulder and immediately wishes she hadn’t, wishes she could disappear, wishes she were starting at any other crappy minimum wage job in any other dingy quick-stop convenience store in any other place in the world.

snap battles (poppy x mc)
A/N: i remember seeing something about a what if scenario in which poppy and mc are secretly dating and they hide it in a stereotypical rom-com style. however, it would be boring if it doesn’t have the enemies to lovers trope so i decided why not fuck around and write something that evolves into a rom-com? day 2 prompt ‘present’. i’ll fix the formatting later this isn’t the full thing yet because i haven’t finished it yet. happy #poppyweekend simps. sorry for all the typos this has been sitting in my drafts since last year
Summary: in which poppy is a bored rich kid and accidentally adds her archnemesis on snapchat, all because of a few bottles of champagne, leading her to sync her contacts and automatically add everyone.

Poppy Weekend Day 2 - Present
Poppy and Bea
unfortunatelyhave to work on another project together and it’s a lot more mundane than shooting a commercial for an animal shelter. Mypast entry for the poppy weekend
Boppy in the HSAU. Poppy never wants to go home so she usually stays super late at school. Bea noticed that poppy was still a school after her football practice for one too many days until she finally approaches her.
They never talk about it. Bea just starts keeping poppy company and inviting her home for dinner with her fam. Her parents think they are dating but they are respecting bea’s privacy so they don’t ask (they are not dating).
They keep this charade that they don’t really like eachother even if they spend most of their time together.
They are both in love but they don’t know it. Shjsjsjjsj

the past—
where an austere dragon descended from the skies to the call of a benevolent goddess who roamed the mortal earth.
In the many millennia before the present, it was all about survival. The discord amongst the heavenly individuals, eventually drove many gods and goddesses alike to descend to the mortal earth below where they could look for a new life as someone new, despite their holy blood. One of whom goes by the name of Poppy, found a small rural village which came to be under her care in the following years she descended.
However, she found the vermin which lived in the dark corners of her land to be affecting the crops and eventually the health of many of her people, who succumbed to the sicknesses and diseases these creatures brought with them. So, she called upon a friend from the skies, who came to her and dispelled the issues with ease.
One afternoon, Poppy was distributing seeds to a family who was heavily affected by the recent loss of their crops. After her friend had removed the vermin causing much trouble, she brushed her fingers against the earth beneath her feet and dropped a few seeds into the small concave she made.
“Six years they shall grow,” she said. “On the seventh, you shall receive bountiful. And your family shall be eating well for the many seasons to come.”
“Thank you for your wisdom, Your Grace,” the farmer bowed, before returning to the hut where he lived with his family.
“Poppy.”
Poppy turned to the rumbling voice which called her name.
“Ah, welcome back Bea,” she smiled at the dragon, whose golden eyes were like lanterns in the shadows of the cave where Poppy was sure smelled like blood.
“I have fulfilled my end of our contract. The creatures which have plagued your people, cease to be.”
Poppy placed a hand on Bea’s muzzle, and laughed gently. Chuckling, Bea would have described it to be. Melodical as she always has been. “Oh, how very powerful of you, Beatrice! The power to rattle the stars!”
She pauses, then presses closer to the dragon, indulging in the warmth underneath the cool-to-the-touch scales, listening to the constant rumble. “Shall I interest you with another?”
One that Bea had been grateful to accept. To co-found a city together, where theirpeople would prosper. It was also where Bea has shifted into her mortal body for the first time, and where Poppy had taught her how to present herself as “Bea the goddess” and not “Bea the menacing dragon”. A constant anchoring presence behind Poppy, as she watched this goddess negotiate with their people, as well as with other divine beings whom had become close friends with Bea over the decades.
Alas, Bea had found someone she could devote herself to.
She had heard of a word to describe what she was feeling. Bea had heard it while on a walk and came across a young gentleman confessing to a beautiful maiden.
In love.
Was she?
A dragon, who had her history, her entire life bathed in blood…in love with someone who radiated sunlight onto this world plagued with unimaginable darkness?
When it had clicked in her head, the bond was severed.
The earth had been torn asunder, and a thunderous roar tore the heavens.
A dragon’s cry. She had lost her other half.
