Thinking about the last question a little more, I think it’s relevant to discuss the difference between a kogyaru and a joushi kousei.

A kogyaru/kogal (short for “koukousei gyaru”, meaning “highschool gal”) is a high-school aged gyaru, especially one who wears her school uniform frequently and styles it to be in contemporary gyaru fashion. For example, kogyaru often opt for loose socks over the more traditional navy calf-high socks (although they may wear those as well), roll their skirts to be shorter, and wear their cardigan extra baggy (likely to make their skirt look shorter and their legs look skinnier in comparison)

“Joushi Kousei” means “high school girl” and is often shortened JK- to add more confusion kogyaru are nowadays also often called JK. (A kogyaru is a JK but not all JK are necessarily kogyaru- you’ll know a kogyaru when you see one!.) A JK will be more likely (but not necessarily) to follow school regulations as to how her uniform is worn, keep her hair natural-colored, and generally keep a clean and “normal” appearance. However, the influence of kogyaru fashion has bled into JK a great deal, so hybrid styles are common and makes differentiation a little more difficult.

Top photo is a group of kogyaru, bottom left is a group of JK, and the bottom right is an example of the “hybrid style”. All could be called “JK”.
