This might be interesting! All seasons of MASH are up for review on Rotten Tomatoes, with very little activity displayed so far. Here is season 8 in case you’re curious, for example.

Go ahead and give stars to your favorite seasons if you feel inclined. Or just give 5-star ratings to all the seasons, idc.

“Max’s Movies” by Bob Stilson was a comic that appeared in one of the video store magazines, and featured amusing anecdotes from the world of home video rental. I cut out and saved a bunch of them in the Video Store Scrapbook.

I hope posting this doesn’t offend Mr. Stilson should he still be in the business of making comics!

I don’t watch the show but I’m seeing some panic of potential cancellation based on ratings vs. last year. Hopefully this explanation helps.

Let me open with: Supergirl has a 99% chance of being renewed. I’ll break down why.

1. Relative Ratings: Ratings only matter relative to other shows on a network. Since Supergirl was on CBS last year, the visible season-to-season ratings dip is expected because CBS, as a network, pulls in a ton more viewers than CW. There was absolutely no way Supergirl would keep the same numbers on CW that they had on CBS. CBS knew this going in.

2. The CW is co-owned by two companies: CBS [C] & Warner Brothers [W]. The network attempts to keep an equal amount of shows produced by each on the network. What that means is that roughly 50% of the CW is CBS produced shows, and 50% is WB. That also means, come cancellation, they try to keep that even spread. WB produces some of the highest ratings grabbers on the network: Arrow, Flash, Supernatural. CBS produces most of the lowest: Jane the Virgin, Crazy ex Girlfriend etc. What does this mean? This means a CBS produced show can have lower ratings than a WB produced show and get renewed while the higher-rated WB produced show is cancelled. Supergirl? CBS Produced.

3. Half of the CW lineup hasn’t aired yet. I can promise you most of those shows being held back are going to be the basement of CW ratings. The 100, Reign and iZombie had cancellable ratings last year and has CW not renewed everything they had, most of these would have been cancelled. Outcome? All of these will be on the chopping block before Supergirl.

Conclusion:Supergirl moved to Vancouver to cut costs and cut some acting contracts down to make the show more feasible on the smaller CW network. It’s cost is in line with Arrow and Flash, and it’s in the top of the CW. CBS has watched the top 3 shows on the CW go to WB every year, they want a winner. Supergirl is that winner for them. I hope this helps calm some fears of it’s cancellation, esp now that it’s got queer rep. The biggest Supergirl fear is not it’s cancellation but CW’s poor track record with killing off every LGBT character they can.

I’m seeing a ton of people posting this copy-and-paste update about boycotting the inauguration by SWITCHING YOUR TELEVISION TO A DIFFERENT CHANNEL. It’s a nice thought and a nice gesture, but that WON’T WORK.

I’m not putting those things in all caps to yell at you, I just want to make sure you see it.

How TV Ratings Work:
Viewership is measured through Nielsen ratings. Unless you’re a “Nielsen family,” you don’t really count. Nielsen Family data is recorded through their Nielsen boxes, and then that data is gathered on a value curve to represent a larger audience.

Basically, no Nielsen box = no count.

Ratings are an estimate. It’s super archaic. But so is cable. That’s why viewer data is ALSO gathered through internet clicks and posts, interaction with online videos and social feeds, and streaming data.

How to REALLY Boycott the Inauguration:
Avoid online content. Avoid clicking on videos, avoid linking articles and tweets, avoid social feeds, avoid recaps. Even hate-watching a video or posting a link to add the comment, “An oil spill in the Pacific Ocean is better for humanity than this administration,” still counts toward viewer data. Your hate-click is still an added view, and it doesn’t come with a little asterisk next to it that says, “But this person loathed it and weeps for the future.”

So changing your channel is chill, and I recommend it! There is so much beautiful, amazing television! It’s a Golden Age of scripted content! But for god’s sake, don’t then go and negate your boycott by opening your Facebook and putting angry faces on a bunch of Trump videos.

Last nights episode had an huge increase in the ratings. Not only in the demographic but the viewership had the biggest increase it’s had since 4x02.

The episode was heavily promoted as a Betty and Archie episode.

So it seems the belief that “Barchie” sunk the ratings last week is proven incorrect. It’ll be interesting to see what next weeks ratings are.

I’m really enjoying season 3 of Elementary. But I was kind of disappointed when I found out that its ratings are a bit low this season. Elementary deserves more viewers, because this show is just awesome.

Lash glue primarily consists of Ethyl Cyanoacrylate (ECA),¹ which is not toxic in small amounts. ECA is safe enough that it’s even used in human medicine as liquid bandages or sutureless surgery.² Various types of ECA, including regular super glue, have been used as home-remedies for decades to treat acute injuries in arachnids.³ So gluing lashes to a scorpion is not dangerous.

There is, of course, a lot of anthropomorphism going on in this video, but I believe it’s silly and exaggerated enough that it won’t cause any misconceptions.

The only problem I can find with this video is that bug-handling on social media a double-edged sword. It’s great PR and silly videos like this can genuinely help entomophobes overcome their fears. However, it can also spread the idea that handling all bugs is a good and fun thing to do.

While this scorpion is very habituated to being handled, not all scorpions will be as tolerant - and as with most bugs, scorpions do not enjoybeing handled, they only tolerateit. Properly handling scorpions takes experience. For example, if they feel like they’re about to fall, they will use their telson (or ‘tail’) to get a better grip - inexperienced handlers are likely to mistake this for a sting and can hurt the scorpion out of fear.⁴

Scorpions are happiest when they’re left alone and allowed to hide all day,⁵ and I fear that videos like this might give prospective scorpion-keepers the wrong idea about these animals’ personalities.

This is an exhaust vent, and katydids take readily to flight, so it’s in no danger of being sucked in, or blown off with no way to right itself. The katydid additionally is not being forced to stay on the vent, and likely was just sitting there when the fan was turned on – and is keeping quite a good grip on it, as they often do in heavy winds.

Fearless praying mantis

Rating:RED

While I don’t think this mantis was forced into this situation at all, it can still definitely be hurt by the sparks. Mantises of course are not capable of understanding what sparks are, and it is simply responding to strange, noxious stimuli and objects flying at it, rather than being able to understand that it should move away to avoid injury. The people involved here should instead have relocated the mantis out of harm’s way.

Despite the efforts of the creator to minimize harm to these worms, they are still being shocked with low voltages of electricity enough to elicit a pain response, which is why the worms are moving so frantically here. Worms do in fact feel pain, though it is processed differently from mammals, and their response here is clearly negative.

An interesting video for sure, and a valiant effort on the part of the creator to minimize harm, but from purely an animal welfare perspective, these worms are still not having a good time.

@is-the-bug-video-cute could this hurt the mantis from it hitting the screen so hard?

Rating:GREEN

It seems very unlikely that the mantis could injure itself here. This is, of course, not beneficial to the mantis, and doesn’t provide enrichment - but it’s not likely to be harmful.I will note thatwe don’t know enough about how insect perception works to know if they experience any negative response to frustrating stimuli like this, but as is, this mantis is not being threatened in any way.

This ladybug is following the pen simply because, like many insects, they use pheromone trails to navigate their environment. The ink in the pen smells similar enough to the pheromones that they will follow the trail of a line. Other insects, like termites, will also follow drawn lines for the same reason.

It’s very common for bees to become tired while foraging and need to rest in flowers, on leaves, or in other places! A few famous examples of this are Diadasia diminuta (globe mallow bee) and Peponapis pruinosa (squash bee), but we see this behavior exhibited in many, if not all species. OP does say they get drunk on pollen, which isn’t entirely true— bees can get “drunk” on fermented nectar, which can happen during the warmer summer months, but not pollen. This eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopavirginica) just needed a little nap in between her many daily activities.

GIRL??????

Rating:RED, DANGEROUS

This is a Portuguese Man O’ War, a hydrozoan that is often called a jellyfish, and more importantly, can sting just like one. Their venom is incrediblypotent, and both severed tentacles and dead specimens can inflict painful stings. In the bestcase scenario, their sting will cause excruciating pain and long, open welts for a few days. In the worst case scenario, their sting can cause fever and shock, or allergic reactions, which have been known to result in death. You should neverdirectly handle a man o’ war, especially not with bare hands in a cup like this.

If you are stung by a man o’ war, immediately seek medical attention. Common “household remedies” like vinegar can actually worsen stings, and there is no way to tell how someone will react to a sting.

Little leaf cutter bee waking up in her tiny leaf bed

Rating:YELLOW

Leaf cutter bees build brood cells for their larvae in clay, wood, rock crevices, or holes left by other animals (depending on the species of leaf cutter). They line these holes with leaves to create a protective chamber for their larvae, which they then fill with pollen for them to eat. When these brood chambers are disturbed (for example when they’re removed from the hole they were built within), the larvae can die.

It’s unknown why these cells have been removed. If they were removed accidentally during yard work, and the person behind the video decided to incubate them, then the video could be rated “cute.” However, if they were removed on purpose and the person behind the video has no experience keeping or studying these bees, it would be “not cute.”

I’m particularly concerned because one entomologist/beekeeper suggested the larva in the bottom brood chamber died, judging by the crudely opened chamber and all the uneaten pollen spilling out. I’m not experienced enough with Megachilebees to say whether this is true or not.

These roaches are being clearly restrained with tape, which both distresses them and can seriously injure/kill them if it is removed. Even though roaches are considered pest animals and are frequently killed, they are still animals, and this is notably inhumane.

Stick insect (Phasmatodea)

@is-the-bug-video-cute

Rating:GREEN

While this stick insect is being held in an unconventional way, it’s being held delicately and is allowed to freely walk around once it’s uncurled from its defensive position. There’s no real way it could be injured here, though generally it is better to support an insect entirely when handling.
