Please don’t fucking log off tumblr on the 17th as a protest. All that’s going to do is give tumblr more reason to shut this place down because of revenue loss.

This is blatantly untrue

Companies do not experience one day of revenue loss and pull the plug, destroying years of work and firing dozens if not hundreds of employees.

Companies which experience loss in revenue and consumer interest make investments and changes in order to regain their users/customers. That’s why organized protests and boycotts WORK. Tumblr will NOT go down after one bad day or week, but they might be willing to listen to its userbase if we put up an organized protest. (If you don’t believe me, think about how long sites like MySpace and Google+ hang around with fractions of their previous user base, often for years.)

Yahoo paid over one billion dollars for Tumblr, and the website will not go offline because of a one-day event, so in conclusion,

DO log off on December 17th to show Tumblr that you disapprove of its recent content ban and clumsy execution of censorship.

Please reblog this version of the post to stop the spread of misinformation.

yayroos:

For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:

  • Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
  • Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
  • Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
  • Come back on the 18th and check in

Don’t:

  • Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)
  • Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.
  • Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
  • Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
  • Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

I’ve been fighting in Dagorhir for eleven years, so it breaks my heart to see the national DGBA board consistently refuse to pay attention to diversity, player safety, and the voice of women. I can’t ignore it anymore, and I’ve decided that I can’t attend Dagorhir events until the national board makes substantive changes.

I sent the following to the DGBA Facebook post, the Dagorhir page, and [email protected]. I encourage you to do the same.

Thanks, y’all.

Eorl Ilsa of Drentha

I stand with all our female fighters and players when I say that the removal of female administration is unacceptable. In light of recent accusations of violence against women in Dagorhir, and the negligence of the DBGA, I demand that our female representatives be reinstated. At this time I am leaving Dagorhir for my safety and the safety of women within the game.

Until such time as the DBGA shows that it values the voice and safety of women, I will not attend a Dagorhir event and call for others in joining me by walking out from this group and the game as well.

Hey! I had a guest place an order in my Etsy during this strike/boycott period so now is a good time to lay bare ALL THE ETSY FEES on just 1 item.

I left my Etsy open after updating all the prices because it is my MAIN income… So…

But please.

Don’t shop on Etsy if you can.

Or any of the “big companies”. Several of us small businesses have alternative ways you can shop and save on additional fees, both sides.

Check out my new shop link (pinned post on my profile!) I’d love for someone patient enough to try out the international option, please?

SHARE FOR AWARENESS!

Adding on. I saw this being shared on Instagram and would like to share it here too.

And their post caption which you MUST READ. PLEASE.

I’m not opposed to the Etsy strike but I think people have forgotten that a true strike doesn’t end until some sort of resolution has been made. The Kellogg’s strike, for example, didn’t have an announced end date. The workers were on strike indefinitely until certain conditions were met.

I worry that giving such a clear, hard end date to the Etsy strike is probably just sending the message to Etsy that their profits will dip for a week and then go right back to normal.

I get that a lot of people can’t afford to close their shops for even a week, but as a union member with the IWW, I really think the first step really should be to organize under a freelance artists’ union so there can be shit like a strike fund, clear communication, and clear demands coming from a centralized force.

IDK, I’m not the most educated person in the world, so maybe I’m off-base, but from where I’m standing, the constant calls for a “general strike” that are really just a planned protest, not a true strike, feel like they’re kind of kneecapping actual strike efforts at times.

I was catching up on my TikTok feed this morning and came across a video talking about the strike organizers “coming up with ways to support people during the strike.”

That’s…not something you should be figuring out afteryou call for a strike. That’s like the first thing you figure out, before you even thinkabout calling for a strike.

This isn’t a strike, it’s a scheduled boycott.

Babies don’t forget there’s an Etsy boycott from April 11-18 to protest the higher service fees recently instated for shop owners despite the fact that the company reported record profits last year. Etsy is usually one of my go-tos but I am absolutely going to stay off for the week. Without its vendors (many of whom are independent artists/creators) Etsy is literally nothing, and if these new policies are undermining their ability to stay on the site without risking their financial stability then they 100% deserve our support. No Etsy this week!!!

upthewitchypunx:

Hey, if you have an Etsy shop consider putting it on vacation mode from April 11 to 18. And if you buy on Etsy, consider not buying on those days.

Etsy’s nickel and diming of sellers in only good for their stockholders, not for actual humans that sell items on their platform.

I’m confused about why we should boycott Israel. Israel does some really not great things, but so do other countries that don’t get the slack that Israel does. When people say they’re going to live in Brazil for a year nobody says “wait but shouldn’t you be boycotting Brazil for cutting down all the trees and kicking Natives off their land” all they say is “Nice, learn to Samba” and when people study in China for a year people are like “oh what an interesting experience you’ll learn so much” and Tumblr doesn’t erupt with lists of companies to boycott, it erupts with lists of Chinese vocab. Somebody explain this to me please.

I’m seeing a ton of people posting this copy-and-paste update about boycotting the inauguration by SWITCHING YOUR TELEVISION TO A DIFFERENT CHANNEL. It’s a nice thought and a nice gesture, but that WON’T WORK.

I’m not putting those things in all caps to yell at you, I just want to make sure you see it.

How TV Ratings Work:
Viewership is measured through Nielsen ratings. Unless you’re a “Nielsen family,” you don’t really count. Nielsen Family data is recorded through their Nielsen boxes, and then that data is gathered on a value curve to represent a larger audience.

Basically, no Nielsen box = no count.

Ratings are an estimate. It’s super archaic. But so is cable. That’s why viewer data is ALSO gathered through internet clicks and posts, interaction with online videos and social feeds, and streaming data.

How to REALLY Boycott the Inauguration:
Avoid online content. Avoid clicking on videos, avoid linking articles and tweets, avoid social feeds, avoid recaps. Even hate-watching a video or posting a link to add the comment, “An oil spill in the Pacific Ocean is better for humanity than this administration,” still counts toward viewer data. Your hate-click is still an added view, and it doesn’t come with a little asterisk next to it that says, “But this person loathed it and weeps for the future.”

So changing your channel is chill, and I recommend it! There is so much beautiful, amazing television! It’s a Golden Age of scripted content! But for god’s sake, don’t then go and negate your boycott by opening your Facebook and putting angry faces on a bunch of Trump videos.

Lucille Times (April 22, 1921 – August 16, 2021)

Lucille Times was born April 12, 1921, in Egypt (Hope Hull), Alabama. Her mother died when she was very young and she was raised by her father, William Sharp in a Christian home with six siblings. During her childhood years the family lived in Chicago, Detroit and Alabama. Mr. Sharp strongly imprinted two ideas on Lucille: The first: “You are no better than anyone else” and the second: “When you’re right don’t back down.”

Lucille married her husband, Charlie Times on February 3, 1939. She and Charlie joined the NAACP shortly after marriage, and in 1950, when the NAACP was banned the couple hosted meetings in their home, despite the danger. In 1950, both Lucille and her husband became registered voters. In 1952, they opened the Times Café (a.k.a. “Sugarhill”) on Holt Street, which operated continuously until 1986.

When Lucille lived in Detroit, she was part of a successful boycott of a butcher shop on 12th Street (later named Rosa Parks Blvd). The shop’s Polish proprietor sold some bad meat to a black man and refused to replace the meat or give him a refund. The neighborhood residents became indignant and refused to shop there and the shop went out of business in less than a month.

Montgomery bus boycott:

In a public conversation at the Rosa Parks Museum in 2017, Lucille recounted her story following her claim that she started the Montgomery bus boycott. On June 15, 1955, she drove her 1955 Buick LeSabre to the cleaners on the Mobile Highway. On the way, bus driver James Blake tried to force her car off of the road three times. After she pulled into the cleaners parking lot, Mr. Blake exited his bus and confronted her with, “you’re a black son of a bitch!” Lucille responded with “you’re a white son of a bitch!” and they immediately started physically fighting. Soon two motorcycle policemen arrived to break them up. At that time Lucille bit Mr. Blake’s left biceps.

After splitting them up one of the policemen talked to Mr. Blake separately and then approached Lucille angrily with “do you know that was a white man you called a ‘white son of a bitch’?” Lucille responded “do you know that I was a black woman that he called a 'black son of a bitch.’” The policeman became infuriated and shook his flashlight in Lucille’s face and said, “if you were a man I’d beat your head to jelly.”

That night E.D. Nixon came to the Times’ Holt Street house and Lucille told him the story. Mr. Nixon responded, “I cannot do anything about what happened off of the bus, something’s got to happen on the bus.” Lucille’s reply was, “I’m starting a boycott tomorrow!” Mr. Nixon said, “wait until after Thanksgiving when the sales come on and we’ll hit them in the pocket.” Lucille repeated emphatically, “I’m starting a boycott tomorrow!”

The next day Lucille began her boycott with her car. She drove people in her neighborhood to their destinations and would pick up people waiting at the bus stops. Her husband helped with his car and they had a “donations” jar at the café where people made contributions for gasoline. The café became a de facto transportation hub, and people would call the café when they needed rides.

Twice during this time, Mr. Nixon brought A. Philip Randolph to the Times’ Holt Street house and Lucille told him her story. During this time Charlie Times began meeting secretly with Mr. Nixon at the café and planning for a large organized boycott. Mr. Times even kept these meetings secret from Lucille until after the big boycott started in December.

At that time, Lucille continued driving people as she had been until the big boycott ended in December 1956.

Lucille Times died from COVID-19 in August 2021 at the age of 100
