This past Typography Tuesday, we highlighted some fancy-pants wood-engraved initialsfrom Charles Enschedé‘s historical survey of Dutch types, Fonderies de caractères et leur matériel dans les Pays-Bas du XVe au XIXe siècle,published in Harlem by De Erven F. Bohn in 1908. Besides surveying metal and wood types used in Dutch printing, this weighty tome also includes many pages of historic cuts used by Dutch printers.

Because we are in somewhat of a fowl mood, today we present a sampling of ROOSTERS! from Mr. Enschedé‘s selection of cuts. We’re cock-sure you’ll just crow over these fine-feathered foundry fellows. Click on the images for the engraving credits.

Series of Portuguese stereotyped characters who happen to be chickens.

A friend of a friend is looking to rehome their rooster. He’s about a year old. I’ve recommended the same shelter where I found Gwen and Luna, but figured I’d ask around here too. The post states:

“This is fluffybutt and he needs a new home. I’m trying to figure out how to make that happen. Any ideas? My kids are afraid of him but if you’re over 6 his rooster-ness is totally tolerable.”

This little guy is currently living in Douglassville, Pennsylvania. Would any of you be interested in taking him? If so, please message me and I can connect you with his current caretaker!

When asked about his temperament:

“He is a little feisty… but he came to us from a woman who raised him from a chick as part of her petting zoo and she was handling him frequently. With a flock of 30 birds we don’t have the time to handle them all regularly and he has since gotten his rooster hormones going. Its all flap and show and not going to hurt anyone. My 2 and 5 year olds can’t be convinced of this and cry and cling to me and refuse to play outside when he is out. Which is the only reason i can’t keep him.”

Anyone able to give this sassy silkie boy a loving home??
