The view of the imposing Matthews Range as seen from the swimming pool at @SararaCamp. Located in the Samburu region of Kenya, this is a remote and beautiful location. This untamed mountain wilderness is what scientists dub a “sky island”—a remarkably remote patch of tropical highland forests that has evolved free of influence for a very long time. This is one of Kenya’s wildest areas, and the visitors who make the trip here are often surprised to find themselves amid lush riverine valleys and thick, forested slopes in the heart of Northern Kenya’s arid desert. It is indeed a very special place. Conservation International @Conservationorg helped establish Sarara Camp and I have to say, it is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Put it on your bucket list. #Kenya #Samburu (at Sarara Camp) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAXqizfBzZS/?igshid=3vzf3ked5djy
Members of the group have been abused, beaten and raped by police after their land was sold to US wildlife charities.
Pictured: Most Samburu still wear traditional dress. The women wear colorful beaded necklaces and the number displayed is a sign of wealth, often given as a dowry. They wear bright clothes, usually red and pink. To protect their eyes from the sun, Samburu warriors often paste their hair with ochre which creates a visor.
