Those various islands that the anthro characters are from are all relatively close together and are collectively referred to as the Mobius Region. Therefore, the anthros themselves are called Mobians.
Both the Mobius Region and the larger continents that humans are from tend to be neutrally isolationist towards each other. Like, both sides are aware of each other’s existence, they respect each other’s existence, but they’re in no rush to mingle. In other words, the various countries, continents, and islands in Sonic games are all like Japan; just like over 98% of Japan’s population is Japanese, the vast majority of the Mobius Region’s population is made up of Mobians, with humans being a very small minority. The opposite is true for the larger continents which are predominantly human. There are few, if any, locations of the Sonic world that are “melting pot” countries like the United States.
Sonic being a world renowned hero who likes to travel all around the world, damn any cultural differences or social taboos, has done a lot to shake up this mindset. Unfortunately, though, Eggman constantly antagonizing the Mobius Region (partially due to their connection to the Chaos Emeralds) by turning it into a war zone has done just as much harm as Sonic has to help. After all, no human would want to visit the Mobius Region when it’s getting attacked by a fellow human once every other week.
Family/last names in Mobian culture aren’t a thing. Instead, they identify themselves by their species (Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, etc.). That’s not to say that families and family dynamics don’t exist for Mobians, but they’re much less emphasized than they are for humans.
With this in mind, let’s explain some cases where this is important…
Amydoesn’t live in the Mobius Region. She and her family are from Station Square, so they likely picked up the last name Rose (in reference to the color of their fur) when they moved over in order to better integrate with human society and customs. Think of it like how immigrants will sometimes pick out more “American” sounding names for themselves when moving to the US.
The Prowers, Tails’ parents, were actually the first G.U.N. sanctioned ambassadors of the Mobius Region and chose last names for themselves in hope of tearing down cultural differences between Mobians and humans (this choice led to them being wildly unpopular with other Mobians) and even gave their son the very human sounding name of Miles for the same reason. Their status as ambassadors also made them one of Eggman’s first targets when he first attempted to conquer the Mobius Region. Tails was too young to remember any of this, but this (in addition to his two tails) contributed to him being bullied as a young child.
There were likely one or two Mobian researchers aboard the ARK who imparted this part of Mobian culture onto Shadow and encouraged him to take the full name of Shadow the Hedgehog. Gerald probably pushed this idea as well, hoping that Shadow identifying himself by his species would make him less likely to side with the Black Arms when they came back.
Charmy’s unconventional full name of “Charmy Bee” rather than “Charmy the Bee” likely comes from Charmy being born on one of the larger continents but his parents still being from the Mobius Region. His last name beinghis species was likely some clerical error on his birth certificate that would’ve been too much of a hassle for Charmy’s parents to change, so it stuck.
Sonic’s actual name is Ogilvie Needlemouse, which he despises and does everything in his power to cover up. His mother was formerly an ace pilot for G.U.N. before she retired and settled down on Christmas Island. The Tornado was a her old plane that she later gave to Sonic, which Sonic then passed on to Tails.
In Mobian culture, it’s generally expected to be independent at a much younger age than humans, which is why we have eight-year-old Tails owning and likely living in his own workshop.
Angel Island orbits around the planet as if it were a moon stuck in the atmosphere. (I think Archie also did this but idr)
Mobians all wear gloves because most of them still have claws that can accidentally scratch stuff if left uncovered. There’s some accessorizing involved as well, but it’s mostly a practical thing. After Sonic became a celebrity, though, it became a fashion statement for humans.
Rings, in addition to being a natural energy source, are also a world currency. Specific countries/islands may have their own unique currency, but Rings can be used anywhere.
Shadow the Hedgehog is the ultimate life form, created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the evil Eggman’s grandfather. He would eventually become something of an anti-hero.
