Black Artist Spotlight - Adinkra Ancestral Guidance cards

We move away now from the literal personified style decks and go into the symbol based with Simone Bresi-Ando’s deck. It is a minimalist style deck of symbols with explanations based in the Adinkra language- linked with the Akan people of Ghana and the Gyaman people of Ivory Coast.

Simone showcases the deck best herself in this video; showing how each card is designed to help with the interpretation. Though the deck does not cover the entire symbolic Adinkra language (there are over 400!), the 44 symbols carefully selected by Simone Bresi-Ando to focus on are meant to open the door to further insights and messages. This interview gives insight into what the Adrinkra cards and Simone are all about.

Black Artist Spotlight - Afro Tarot & Oracle

Jessi Jumanji’s multimedia artwork combines photos with evoking additions of futurism, ecology, and ancestry in vivid tones and singing colors. It is an incredible style to bring to a deck and she’s offering two right now for pre-order: a Tarot and an Oracle.
They have different focuses; the Tarot showcasing African heritage and culture with her distinct Afrofuturist styled images; while the Flora and Fauna of Africa Oracle deck is an ecological exploration of over 100 species of plants and animals.

She has plenty of non-deck work that is jaw-droppingly beautiful as well; best showcased by this recent article from AfroPunk. You can also keep up with her work through her Instagram or her Facebook. And it’s worth following both if you have the accounts- there is variety between the two and it is an eye opening rabbit hole to explore.

Black Artist Spotlight - Dust II Onyx

The Dust II Onyx Tarot deck by Courtney Alexander is a breathtaking multimedia style deck full of passion, power, heart, and soul. In the artists own words, “These applications are a way of exploring the intersections of Black identity while featuring historical facts, cultural myths, traditions, symbolism, and icons throughout the Black Diaspora.”

I spent a couple hours reading Courtney’s Instagram and website to learn her story and the journey of Dust 2 Onyx. When I finished, it inspired me to post about black focused Tarot here for the next week. Uplifting black voices and highlighting their passions is important; always. But especially right now.

So please, at least read about Courtney on her own pages. See her incredible artwork, support her (there are products beyond the deck!), or even sponsor a deck for another person of color.

You and your artwork, your voice and your passion are beautiful and driving, Courtney.

(I’ve been thinking about something I can do specifically on this blog to help support the Black Lives Matter movement and decided I would like to do a series highlighting Tarot decks that were designed/created by persons of color.

I was highly inspired by this lovely article from ShoppeBlack, in addition to Courtney Alexander herself.

Look for more decks over the coming days to showcase and support black artists and viewpoints! Reblogs are encouraged!)
