Nour Sokhon //
is a Lebanese Artist, Sound designer and Filmmaker based in Beirut, Lebanon. She recently completed an artist residency at Haven for Artists; an organisation which supports the modern underground scene in the Middle East. During her time at Haven she has collaborated with various artists which come from different disciplines yet all have a common interest in creating a sensuous environment for the audience to participate in. Her collaboration with Ziad Moukarzel, Lea Kirkdian and Xavier Baghdadi from Junk Munkez has allowed for her recent artistic vision to come to life with an exhibition entitled “The Inconvenience of Silence” which took place from May 23rd till the 6th of June, 2018 in the Haven for Artists community gallery, Concept 2092.
Her infatuation with the creative process began to flourish in her adolescent years while in Dubai where she found comfort in listening to the sound of the Arabian Gulf waters as she wrote poetry. Her inquisitive and creative nature led her to achieve an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from The American University in Dubai, 2014. Nour’s thesis Gesticulation reflected her own practice’s interest in the crossovers and counterpoints between experimentation and creativity in arts and science.
She explored her interests even further during her studies at the Glasgow School of Art in 2017 where she obtained a Master’s degree in Sound for the Moving Image. During her time there she culminated a large scale Masters project; a documentary entitled People on Sound. The documentary explores the transformative effects that sound has on individuals. This project showcases her ability to take on a variety of roles and creative tasks at all stages of the filmmaking process and post production.
Nour has exhibited her artwork in Dubai, London, Glasgow and Beirut. She has also performed at the Al Quoz Arts Festival (Dubai, UAE), the Other Worlds Festival (Blackpool, UK), Frequent Defect (Beirut, LB), Haven for Artists (Beirut, LB), Mansion (Beirut, LB), and Radio Beirut (Beirut, LB) .
Member of two collectives Tse Tse Fly Middle East (sound) and Nightmares From Fabric (transdisciplinary).
