My first review is about Steins;Gate and I really don’t have a lot to say about this since it just was not my cup of tea. However, I want to start writing about the shows I watch. So:

Plot-The idea was fairly unique in the world of anime. Although I felt the show established itself as a time travel show that followed the “change the future as you change the past” theory rather than believing that “everything is linear, even with time travel,” I felt like it took a weird middle path. However, that mostly made the show and its antiques fairly unique. There were no plot holes to my notice (which is easy with time travel,) although I thought there was at first, after thinking about it I realized it made relative sense. I liked the parallel structure of the episodes.

Characters- This is where I felt the show lacked the most. The first several episodes of Steins;Gate are said to be “boring,” by many, and although I probably would have dropped the show if this show hadn’t been so highly recommended, I think that’s a bit of an overstatement, but not far off from the truth. The show could have been majorly improved if the characters had deeper and more meaningful development. Instead, the meaningful development was saved for later in the series, after we watched Okabe cry over Mayuri and have to choose between Mayuri and Makise. We receive hints at character development: Mayuri was left devastated by her grandmother’s death and felt saved by Okabe, Okabe feels the need to make everything fantastical, and Makise has daddy issues, but none of that felt solid or relatable. Why was Mayuri devastated by her grandmother’s death? What fond memories did she have of her grandmother? What kind of person was her grandmother? Did Mayuri take after her? Obviously Makise is sad over her drama with her father, but what about her father has she taken after? I know her opposition to time travel was based around that, but that was about it. Instead of spending the first few episodes trying to make me care about their characters in a meaningful way, the show wasted time showing the audience conversations between characters that had no substance.

Animation- The animation and symbolism of the show’s color was a stunning part of the show.

Sound-The opening theme was beautiful and perfect for a sci-fi, and although the voice acting was good, neither that nor the soundtrack stood out to me.

Other random nitpicks I wrote while watching the show:

-Didnt get to hear Makise’s lecture, Titor’s theory, feel left out of action and conjecture

-Emotional outbreak about father in ep4 from Makise felt forced

Overall Score:

Although I didn’t really enjoy this show, a lot of that was due to the show just not being my type. I felt a little could have been done to make the show a lot better, but nonetheless:

7/10
