I’ve been wanting to paint this beautiful little kunai paper cutting knife for awhile, and I figured today was the day! I’ve really enjoyed participating in this challenge, it’s been a great opportunity to experiment with new subjects and compositions. I found some awesome bright green leaf litter on a walk through the neighborhood this morning, and thought it would contrast nicely with the green leaves of the citrus from yesterday. I had a lot of fun working on this one, really trying to emphasise shapes with broad brushstrokes.

I found some good fruit in the market today, couldn’t resist painting it! The orange citrus on the lower left is a hybrid mandarin orange and kumquat. Since those are both some of my favorites I imagined this hybrid would be delicious… it turns out it is much more fun to paint than it is to eat!

Day 28 #stradaeasel challenge
Behold, the beautiful solvent jar that I never use! I forget where I acquired this awesome container, but years ago I filled it with walnut oil back when that was a medium I liked to work with. Shortly thereafter, I decided that I didn’t really like working with walnut oil after all, so since then the jar has served more of a decorative purpose in the studio rather than a utilitarian one. It was pretty fun to work out that metallic patina!

I’m really enjoying all the reflected light opportunities to be found in the folds of drapery; it reminds me a lot of the way light gets reflected in the shadows of snowbanks (it is the same principle, after all). In this cloth snowbank I saw fit to situate a partially unwrapped satsuma, in an effort to paint it one last time before it began to grow mold. Lots of fun textures in this one!

I stepped out of the studio and into the living room today to paint this lovely gourd pile. We harvested these back in September, and many are still in good shape! It was fun to experiment with more of a low light situation after a couple weeks of intense direct light in the studio, and the overcast skies outside provided a nice cool accent.

Day 23 #stradaeasel challenge
How many times am I going to paint this elephant, you ask? As many times as I want, I reply! I’m continuing here with the drapery and conifer needle motif; both are fairly unfamiliar textures for me to paint so repition is key to understanding them better, much like the elephant. I was struggling a bit today from setting up the still life through to the final brush stroke, but it was good to push through to a finish despite more than a few setbacks in the process!

This one was a lot of fun, it’s been awhile since I’ve painted a good skull! The skull in question is some sort of weasel I’ve had in my collection for years, accompanied by a douglas fir cone, some macro lichen, and what has quickly become my favorite little metal cup.

Day 10 #stradaeasel challenge
“The Elephant in the Room” 8" x 10" oil on linen panel, 2021
I tried chasing the sunlight again in the studio today, so this little elephant ended up skulking in the shadows. I think it made for a stronger, more dramatic composition than my original setup with all the objects in the scene fully lit. Eventually everything was engulfed in shadow and i had to work from memory for a bit using the light tones i had premixed earlier, but it worked out and I’m pretty happy with this one!

I’ve spent the past couple weeks painting subjects on low surfaces, I thought it might be fun to look up at something! I love this green tea pot we have perched above our kitchen cabinet, and I added a few wooden and botanical elements into the scene for textural variety. The carved wood backdrop was lots of fun to work out!
