It has been a while since I last showed a moving image on these pages (those seen thus far may all be seen together here), this makes a great addition to my collected still photographs of Sandow.

I’ve been unable to find out any further information on this photograph from the turn of the century - as always, if any of my readers can enlighten me I shall be glad of the kind contribution and add the details here.

[edit]
Not one but two of our fine followers have sent in their thoughts on this photograph -

“This is an anatomical demonstration, the ‘professor’ is pushing down on the model’s arm so that the model’s muscles will stand out as he resists. There was a Canadian anatomist named Lockhart who published a book of similar photos entitled Living Anatomy. I think that this photo is too old to be Lockhart’s, but it is the same genre.”

“I think this is part of the stereo collection of Dr Desbonnet -although I can’t find at this moment where in my blog I put it. Athlete pictured is probably Ernest Cadine.”

My thanks to you both.

The printed inscription on this magnificent man’s photograph looked familiar, on investigation I found I have another from the same photographer, one K. Pospishil of Bohemia.

A very welcome addition to my small collection of photographs showing Eugen Sandow, and such extremely thorough credits are a delight to see!

I promised more of the Deriaz brothers when last I shared a photograph from this family of remarkable strongmen. Here is another picture of Adrien, published in the magazine La Culture Physique, 1905, when he placed second in a competition for ‘physical beauty’, the precursor to body building contests later in the century. The winner was a fellow called Paul Gasquet, but I haven’t been able to find a photograph to prove his superiority!

Presented in a similar artistically embellished way as the 1903 set of male nude photographs posted previously, this double-page spread of neatly arranged pictures with their meticulously detailed borders depict Bobby Pandour, displaying his impressively muscled body in a variety of poses. The full size image can be seen here.

Adrien Deriaz, Swiss strongman, photographed at the turn of the last century at the height of his fame. Unusually, for physique photographs in this era, he does not wear the customary leaf to protect his modesty. One of his brothers, Maurice, has featured here before, I shall see if I can find any more of them for you!

Georg Lurich : another submission from our generous reader ‘Nice Guy’ - thankyou kindly, good sir. Lurich was an Estonian strongman and Greco-Roman wrestler. Always curious to find out about the people behind these pictures, I’ve done a little digging and found he was a fascinating character, his life story and achievements are well worth a read.

Whilst looking up further information on Georg Lurich to go with my previous post, I happened across this extraordinary photograph of one of his feats of strength - lifting five men with just one arm. I can’t figure out quite how he’s holding them up, but the jolly chap at the top looks the happiest with the situation by far!

Taken in uncommon close-up for the era, this muscular chap fairly fills the frame and makes for a very striking image - the hint of a smile (especially about the eyes) gives him an endearing appeal, and makes me wonder who he was, and what he was like to know.

Milo Brinn, 1895.

“Milo Brinn (born Luigi Borra) performed feats of strength and took on all comers as a wrestler at the famous Folies Berger in Paris. Brinn’s act at the Folies consisted of tumbling and gymnastics, hand balancing, figure display, heavy juggling and feats of supporting and carrying weights. He could perform a crucifix with 66lb. in each hand and could do a one-leg squat holding 60 kg.” From OldtimeStrongman.com

A Perfect Picture of Manhood” says the printed caption - oh yes, all the very manliest of men just love to wear animal-print low cut all-in-one …..uhhhh….what IS that thing, sir, shall we call it a strapless leotard? I’m sure he thought he looked magnificent, but I’m afraid I chuckled.

A young Eugen Sandow, photographed here in the late 1880s, after leaving Prussia to embark on his early career as a circus strongman. As befitting someone whose body would become his business, he reveals almost all to show those superbly defined flexed muscles for the admiration of his audience.

Showing off his impressive physique in the photographer’s studio, this strapping chap seems to have been given a little discreet editing before printing; he’s distinctly blurry around the edges of that little fig leaf!

The impressively muscular Otto Olympier, his picture taken by an uncredited photographer and published as a postcard. Not intended to be sent home from a holiday as we mostly use them today, but for those who collected the cards as a hobby; images of strongmen and bodybuilders seem to have been a popular subject, judging by the amount which have survived to this day.
