Is SUMMER WARS (2009) a Re-Hash of The Digimon Movie? 

Given their similarities, it’s easy to assume that SUMMER WARS (2009) is an uninspired ripoff of the “Our War Game” segment of The Digimon Movie… but if you look closer, you’ll find that  they both share the same director (Mamoru Hosoda), their story lines explore different themes, and that the truth is much more nuanced. Like Rock Lee taking off his ankle weights, Mamoru Hosoda returned to the core ideas of The Digimon Movie to give it the unhindered treatment it deserves, with the full running time of a feature film and a production budget to match.

SUMMER WARS isn’t a ripoff, it’s The Digimon Movie’s evolution.
