The Crab Nebula - 964 years ago Chinese astronomers looked to the sky and saw a bright new star in the constellation of Taurus. In 1731 English astronomer John Bevis discovered a small faint smudge in his telescope in the same spot of the sky. This then became the first ever seen nebula counterpart of a visually observed supernova. Located 6500 light years from Earth, this rapidly expanding explosion is now 11 light years across, an incredible distance for the shock wave to have travelled in less than 100 years!
