Hubble Hooks a Supernova Host Galaxy

This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope features the spectacular galaxy NGC 2442, nicknamed the Meathook galaxy owing to its extremely asymmetrical and irregular shape.

This galaxy was host to a supernova explosion spotted in March 2015, known as SN 2015F, that was created by a white dwarf star. The white dwarf was part of a binary star system and siphoned mass from its companion, eventually becoming too greedy and taking on more than it could handle. This unbalanced the star and triggered runaway nuclear fusion that eventually led to an intensely violent supernova explosion. The supernova shone brightly for quite some time and was easily visible from Earth through even a small telescope until months later.

the-gender-collector-emself:

Hello! I’ve invented a system of space-themed xenic alignments that I’m calling the Cosmoic Alignments. I wanted to keep them completely independent of male, female, masc, and fem as well as give them a sort of abstract feel. I’ll list the alignments below, and then provide their flags in a Read More.

I want to also note that these can be used by any human or nonhuman, whether they have no gender or many genders. They also don’t have to be xenogender in order to identify with these.

Void-aligned - A formless, dark, and frigid alignment. May be unaligned or reject alignment altogether. Associated with black holes and deep space.

Constellation-aligned - A cold, multifaceted alignment that is complex and solid. May feel as though the individual parts of the alignment make up one larger alignment identity. Associated with starlight and astrology.

Nebula-aligned - A fluid, colorful, and bright alignment that floats slowly through the cold void of space. May often feel cloudy or intangible. Associated with the alignment of supernova and with stars.

Aurora-aligned - A fluctuating, colorful, and bright alignment that swirls through the temperate atmosphere. Associated with solar winds, magnetic fields, and planet Earth.

Stellar-aligned - A large, hot, and bright alignment with a fixed course through space. May be loud or boisterous. Associated with light and solar eclipses.

Supernova-aligned - A huge and red-hot alignment that seems to expand rapidly in all directions. May feel like it’s burning up other alignments around it. Associated with stars.

Planet-aligned - A stable, solid, and warm alignment thriving with liveliness. May align with both sunlight or darkness. Associated with weather patterns and gravitational forces.

Lunar-aligned - A quiet, slow, and cold alignment with a fixed course through space. May align with softness or grace. Associated with water and lunar eclipses.

Asteroid-aligned - An erratic and unpredictable alignment that is cold. May feel like it’s far away from other alignments.

Singularity-aligned - A small and enigmatic red-hot alignment that has the potential to be something bigger. May indicate questioning alignment rather than being sure.

Quantum-aligned - A paradoxical alignment that is both known and unknown, present and absent. May be complex or simple, and may overlap with many other alignments or none at all.

Language to use: “I am a cosmoic demiboy. My alignment is lunar. I am a lunar-aligned demiboy.”

** All flags are below the cut. They’re in order from top to bottom. **

Supernova Remnant Cassiopeia A (NASA, Chandra, 1/6/09) by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center

Supernova Remnant Cassiopeia A (NASA, Chandra, 1/6/09) by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center For the first time, a multiwavelength three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction of a supernova remnant has been created. This stunning visualization of Cassiopeia A (Cas A), the result of an explosion approximately 330 years ago, uses X-ray data from Chandra, infrared data from Spitzer and pre-existing optical data from NOAO’s 4-meter telescope at Kitt Peak and the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT 2.4-meter telescope. In this visualization, the green region is mostly iron observed in X-rays. The yellow region is a combination of argon and silicon seen in X-rays, optical, and infrared – including jets of silicon – plus outer debris seen in the optical. The red region is cold debris seen in the infrared. Finally, the blue reveals the outer blast wave, most prominently detected in X-rays.

This is the Crab Nebula!

This seemingly inert supernova remnant emits 75,000 times more energy than the Sun. Despite the neutron star in its center having a small diameter of 18 miles, it has a mass of 1.5 times the Sun!

This is LMC N49!

Considered to be the brightest supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud satellite galaxy, the center of this beautiful object holds a dead star. This neutron star has a strong magnetic field and gamma ray bursts that distinguish it as a “soft gamma repeater” star!

This is LMC N49! ✨✨✨

This is the brightest supernova remnant in the Large Magellanic Cloud, located about 160,000 light years away. Scientists are tracking a strange bullet-shaped object travelling through the remnant, possibly a strongly magnetic neutron star!

There’s a 250 light-year hole in the center of emission nebula N44 and astronomers aren’t sure why. It could be that particle winds from massive stars are pushing out the gas. Perhaps a more compelling explanation though, based on the detection of X-ray emitting gas, is that supernova explosions carved out this cavern!
