This Is Why Autotune Has Weakened Hip-Hop

The intended purpose of auto-tune was to limit the time spent in recording studios by picking up on off-key notes and altering them. It lessens the need for hours of editing, multiple re-recordings, and post-production recordings. This benefits both the artists and recording studios. Artists now have room for better time management and the recording studios are generating more revenue because they can fit more recording sessions into their midst.

When it comes to the rap element of hip-hop, auto tune has enabled wack rhymes to sound “dope”, by delivering that robotic sound. This has caused hip hop listeners to psychologically pay more attention to the catchiness of a track, rather than potent lyricism. Nowadays lot of upcoming, “so-called rappers” are focused on writing catchy rhymes rather than meaningful phrases.

T-Pain is known for his signature robotic sound and is responsible for the emerge of auto tune in hip hop. In his early days, people used to wonder about his technique, which questioned if he actually had any talent. He spent years trying to hide facts about his vocalist status. It appears that T-Pain is a singer, that is thriving off the commercial success of his mastery with the intense sound of auto tune.

Rappers like Lil Wayne and Future have mixtapes and albums that are bombarded with auto tune experiments. Their search within the use of auto tune exposes the truth about the discomfort they have about their voices and rap skills. If you have a comfort zone issue with making music, then you are not a true musician.

There is a serious problem with the over-saturation of the enhancer and it has caused a decrease of pure talent in hip hop. It’s use has been geared more towards commercialism. Artists are strictly making chart topper tunes these days.

A lot of artists are fond of playing around with the tool rather than just going into the studio and laying down bars, or spitting their written rhymes. Instead of using auto tune as a form of balance to finalize their craft, they’d rather rely on what auto tune can do for them, rather than actually creating something auto tune can enhance.

Auto tune has been abused to a point in which all songs have the same mechanical sound. The robotic sound is the new vibe for “hip-hop” listeners. It is impossible to elevate rap when the original practice is eliminated, lyrical substance and skill.

This mentality about auto tune has given the most non creative individuals the chance to top the charts with their polyphonic sound, and calling it hip-hop. The blueprint for what rappers sound like today, does not serve was true emceeing is.

Hip Hop is one of the biggest influences on music world wide. The over saturation of auto tune has even spread into Nigerian culture, to a point in where the purity of Nigerian music is vanishing and leaning towards a more western feel.

Just because something can produce an revolutionary effect, does not mean it should be used to it’s maximum ability. Technology has always been a part of the creative expression of hip-hop music. The origin use of turntables, guitar amps, and djing techniques like back spinning and scratching, as well as the art of sampling, are the original forms of hip hop technology. From there the technology of making tunes has elevated to a complex level with the appropriate use of auto tune, synths, and MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). Hip hop has the ability to evolve as it should.

The abuse of autotune has transformed the sound of hip-hop (whether the mainstream culture admits it or not), and to an extent that the traditional values of hip hop are not represented. In order for hip hop to progress in the right direction, the raw elements of its sound must be revisited.
