One thing that’s always rubbed me the wrong way with Robin’s treatment in Teen Titans go is that when it comes to their own canon, Robin has one of the saddest back stories of all the titans.

Like Robin didn’t really learn how to fight. He was part of a traveling circus whose entire family was murdered by a crime boss in a circus accident. The reason his name is “Robin” is b/c that was his stage name. His family were named the “flying” Graysons. So like a lot of dead parent jokes are made about Batman, but there’s zero acknowledgment of Robin’s dead parents. But plenty of the jokes made would come off as cruel if it were to be acknowledged.

Like there’s this bit about “Robin can’t fly.” And like oh my god, that’s just kind of mean considering the context of “flying” to Robin’s story. Idk, I think it’s funny on the surface but knowing what I know about Robin…it seems really really mean. And it just seems like one of those situations that proves you don’t make fun of people at their expense b/c you don’t know the trauma behind it. You can make jokes that aren’t meant to be humiliating, demeaning, or belittling. You can make jokes at Robin not having powers without it tearing Robin down. Robin doesn’t have to feel bad about not having powers in order for not having powers to be funny. Not being serious is one thing, but tearing down confidence isn’t funny…especially when the things that explains the joke is really sad
