So when a good friend asks you to go to a show with them and you don’t know the band, what do you do?

A. Apologize and make up a lame excuse as to why you are toooooo busy.

B. Do your homework first and listen to the band once or twice. Probably hate it. Probably don’t go.

C. Say yes and show up, no questions asked. Maybe listen to the band once or twice just to know what shoes to wear.

If you are me, it’s option C. All the time. Always. That has been my rule this year anyway. When my friend asked me to go see The Devil Makes Three this Friday at the Crystal Ballroom, of course I said yes. I had never heard of this band. I had never listened to this band. Doesn’t matter, I’m going.

This past weekend, I put on their album “Do Wrong Right” so I could figure out what shoes to wear. Whoa. It’s acoustic, it’s ragtime-country-folk-rockabilly inspired and it’s fun. Wait, are they from Brooklyn? I don’t think I can do this if they are being ironic. Oh good they aren’t (they are from Santa Cruz). By the time I finished listening, I couldn’t wait to put on their live album “Stomp and Smash” to see what that was all about. Two songs in and I was sold. This show is going to be FUN.

Hold on. They don’t have a drummer. I don’t have anything against acoustic live music without drums, but it tends to be in venues where there are seats (like the Aladdin for example). Apparently playing a venue like the Crystal Ballroom won’t a problem. Front man Pete Bernhard says:

“We play mainly rock venues where it’s not seated. Everybody dances. And except for the instrumentation and the fact that we don’t have a drummer, it’s pretty much like a rock gig. It can get pretty crazy, people are dancing and drinking and yelling. And that’s the way we like it.”

Ok, I can get into that. In fact, I accept your challenge. As for the shoe decision? Sounds like dancing shoes to me…

Devil Makes Three – Graveyard

Well That’s Me.

The Devil Makes Three – Gracefully Facedown

My theme song.

“When Tess kissed the devil, she tasted death on his mouth.”

Review — The Devil Makes Three by Tori Bovalino

Rating — 4.25/5⭐️

Release Date — 10/08/2021

At first I was not compelled by Tess and her sticky note insults but the story grew on me, ink seeping into my veins. The Devil Makes Three is a fascinating, fast paced YA horror with demons in books, a girl with the world on her shoulders and a tragic boy with a complicated secret and a hidden tattoo. I just didn’t want this story to end and I’ll be thinking about this haunting tale for a very long time. Would highly recommend!
